Seriously how myopic can you be. We''ll protect your right to drop out of high school but then we complain and blame the government handout loving liberals when you have no education get knocked up and go on welfare.

Just once I'd like to see the GOP put their money where their mouths are. You claim to hate Romney er Obamacare and all of those socialist measures then fine do away with EMTALA, Medicare, Medicaid, EIC, etc. Privatize SS, let kids drop out at any age and then eliminate every possible safety net there is. Is it really that hard to see what the ramifications of that nonsense would be?

Education is suppose to be a state issue. So it isn't any of Obama's business obviously. Many people do just fine not finishing high school (not that I would suggest it) . It's not like anyone learns anything at American public schools anyways. Education should ultimately be in the hands of the parents and crappy legislation like the one Obama is suggesting prevent this.

Dumb and wrong on all counts, unless the intent is to keep the poor, immigrants, single women and large chunks of minorities out of the middle class.

why do you think putting education in the hands of the parents would prevent poor from advancing their position in life? Are you so liberal that you think parents shouldn't be in control of their child's education because they might make bad decisions? By that logic the government should just raise everyone's children.

Stop being stupid millions have gone to public schools such as myself learned plenty and have become solid citizens.

Here in NM there is legislation being proposed to fine parents if kids miss too many days. Personally I know a few parents who allow their elementary school age children to stay up all night with them and then either go on late or miss many a day.

There has to be some basic standards like I said you want to allow the kids to dropout and turn into foodstamp nation and when they do it's Obama and the liberals fault.

Because some parents absolutely do not care about the well being of their children.

This is so awesome ... everyone but the parents gets blamed when a child performs poorly in school. So when everyone but the parents try to do something, anything, to develop these children into productive members of society, all the sudden it becomes no one's business but the parents. Wow!

I just knew when Obama said that it would generate that type of reaction from some people. But seriously what possible argument is there to not keep these kids in school till they graduate or become legal adults?? Have we seriously devolved that much as a country now?

I do agree with the Republicans on this one. Personally, I don't even think this is a government issue. How do you mandate that an individual stay in school?

Some kids don't have parents who can provide for them at ages under 18 and need to work (I am lucky that I am not one of them but not all of us are that lucky).

It happened when the highly educated became known as elitists and college professors as liberal brainwashers.

Dissrespect to teachers at all levels is now running rampant and conservatives now wonder why young folks are entitled and disrespectful to their elders.

So you take the super liberal attitude of letting the government raise people's children because the parent might make a decision you disagree with. Completely inappropriate and scary.

That's not a justification to take away every parent's right to choose their child's education.

Just because bad parents exist, there is not justification to take away my and every other parent's right to have the most say in our kids education. This is very basic.

Raise your kid however you want but allowing a child to drop out is not raising a child at all. You are just setting up your kid to be a drain on society and the taxpayer.

A super liberal attitude would be that the parental rights of the parents who allow their children to drop out be severed and those children who then become wards of the state. No one is advocating that.

I think you're confusing drop out with pull out. No one is saying you can't pull your kid out and home school them or let them graduate early.

"Tonight," Obama bellowed, "I am proposing that every state--every state--requires that all students stay in high school until they graduate or turn 18."

the federal government requiring states to adhere to this would be the use of federal power. Using the word 'state' in a sentence doesn't change this....

Nowhere did he suggest the federal government require anything. He suggested the states require it.
