A 5 yr deal is more valuable to a guy closer to 30. For a young guy like Love it's a year earlier to lock into his next long term contract and a year less stuck in Minnesota.

You don't trade 25,14, and 40% 3pt shooting at 23 years of age, unless it's for Durant.

Yeah, they're not very smart at all if he wants the 5th year and they're playing hardball...

Why would you play hardball over the 5th year? He'd be 28 in the last year of the deal!

Terrible enough to get a couple lottery picks named Love and Rubio.

McHale traded with Memphis to get Kevin Love to Minny.

Yep. McHale traded DOWN for Love AND got to dump salary on Memphis.

One of his better deals (along with drafting KG in 1995).

He wasn't completely worthless as a GM. Just not great overall.

Other the Joe Smith fiasco, he was actually pretty decent. He had some bad luck with injuries. Terrell Brandon's injury set them back a lot because they let go of Billups. Marbury wanted to be overpaid and left.

They got to the WCF and Sprewell decided to feed his family and that team fell apart. They were well on their way to rebuilding when they got a monster in Big Al and drafted Love. Unfortunately, Al blew out his knee and the rest was history. Mchale was actually a pretty good talent evaluator. His problems was more on the business side. He paid Garnett too much money and the Joe Smith thing.
