On the contrary, I saw numerous occasions where republicans were nodding their heads and even a few bursts of applause. Once again Mr. Obama spoke to both sides. Only this time it was different. For the first time you saw the president say "keep up, cause you ain't seen nothing yet".
Nothing special in his speech. Politically - it was very savvy. But it won't do much or have much affect on congress. Really will help him with independents and his base. They will slam him on deficits obviously - but really, nothing he can do there. Oh, and stop arguing with bigtexx. Sooner people stop wasting their time there the sooner he will go away.
He is - he said he was from Houston while addressing a point about Obama and the energy industry. I agreed with much of the President's speech - particularly on the emphasis for rewarding pro-American business actions - but it's just a speech. I also liked how he emphasized what he can do alone as President, but then asked Congress to do their part as well. But at times, it came off a bit like a lecture to Congress, and I'm not sure how well that went over toward less friendly ears. What I really would have liked him to say - perhaps when emphasizing that Americans are the most productive workers in the world - is something like this: "Over the past 30 years, American workers have become more and more productive. Yet while the executives and board of directors have seen significant increases in their compensation, the average middle class has seen no increase when adjusted for inflation. In fact, despite their rise in productivity, they've actually seen a decrease. So more and more middle class families are relying on the government just to keep their bills paid and heads above water. What's wrong with this picture? Isn't America all about rewarding productivity? Isn't it in a business' interest to ensure its own employees can afford its product. Henry Ford saw the value of paying his employees enough to buy the cars they were building. That value led Ford to become one of the biggest companies in the world. Is Ford's thinking still true? I say it is, and I urge the business community to take all the money they've stowed it away and give it to the persons who have made them successful - their employees. I know that if you do that, your employees will pay you back by buying your products, giving you more success" I'm sure what I've just written would be considered class warfare by some of the libertarian free market purists, but I also think it would resonate with the rest of us who live in the real world.

Good speech and one that didn't strike me as overly controversial. As one commentator on NPR said 80% of this speech could've been given by a Republican President.
