Looks like my modem is outmoded (ha ha!) and i need to upgrade from my DOCSIS 2.0 to a DOCSIS 3.0 to fully take advantage of the speeds offered by my ISP.

I was looking at the Motorolla Surfboard 6120 and 6121, but it looks like the 6180, if you can get one, is way more future proof in terms of speed. The 6580 is an all-in-one solution but has some pretty horrible reviews on Amazon.

    Any ideas or suggestions?

Your ISP doesn't provide you with a modem?

I can rent one for $7 a month. I'd rather buy one at that rate.

I bought the 6121 for $80 on Amazon and it's been superb. I was a little worried about future download speeds but then I remembered that the ISP's are a bunch of greedy ****'s and they would try to charge double for it and I'm ok with 27mb down anyway.

Maybe in 5 years I'll think about it.

I bought a 6580 before I switched back to UVerse again. I didn't know it had horrible reviews.

I have the 6120. Has worked perfectly fine for me. I hear the 6121 is good too, a newer version of 6120.

Any decent Docsis 2.0 modem will net you up to 37 Mbps. The rest depends on your isp/plan. I am getting close to 31 Mbps ~ 2.95MB/s with a 2.0 modem.

Docsis 3.0 is if you have speeds above that. For example, Comcast offers a package that advertises speeds up to 100 Mbps. For that you would need Docsis 3.0.

Don't listen to some phone rep who is trying to push modem sales. Do the research yourself.

Yeah very rarely is there a bog in your modem. I liked the 6580 because it had a gigabit switch. Very handy for media streaming.
