Watch and see the republican beltway establishment go into full freakout meltdown if Newt wins Florida.

If Newt wins FL with gusto, the "adults in the room" (as Sam puts it) will react. They will likely react before the primary if the polls show Newt pulling away.

Because. Newt is a philandering pos lobbyist and Santorum thinks birth control should be illegal. Embarrassing!!!

I think this is correct. Having dozens of debates with lame bs talking points does make that craziness seem like it is somehow normal and perhaps beyond typical Limbaugh talking points.

It is hard to know how the general public thinks about the crap these guys spout. Are Dems watching it and indpendents with a brain watching these debates for anything other than wierd entertainment or shadefreude? sp?

This plus why has it only been mentioned once (by Santorum in the last debate, have to give credit there) for Newt literally being thrown out of the House due to ethics violations? The guy was thrown out of politics, yet here he is leading the way in the Republican primary. Whoever said it a few posts back, all Newt does is attack the moderator and call Obama a socialist bureaucratic, Obama will wipe the floor with him, and it won't be pretty.

How are the polls looking in Florida? I'm sure they'll change after tonight anyway.

Two early polls have Gingrich up 9. Romney's biggest strength was his "he's the most electable" argument. If Gingrich can convince the electorate that he's more electable, Romney is going to have major problems. Romney's goal going forward is going to be to make Gingrich seem unstable and unelectable. Should be interesting to see what comes out in tonight's debate.

Why is anybody surprised at Romney's struggles in the South?

Newt is too radioactive to win the nomination, but before he implodes the base is going to make sure Romney is forced to buy into their nonsense.

What are they going to do though? $$$? I'm not convinced that there's an effective way to deploy ad blitzes that affect the nutjobs who make up the primary process, especially with a bunch of crazy caucuses coming up.

Looking more and more like the only way the Repubs will beat Obama in November is by digging up Ronald Reagan's corpse and spending a few billion on bionics....

If they somehow managed to take Newt's political shrewdness and smarts and put them into Romney's body they'd have a real contender.

If necessary, they will go nuclear negative on Newt and completely bury him in mud. Even if doing so tears the party apart and creates permanent fault lines. Newt being successful would do the same thing.

The sooner they get started the better because he becomes more emboldened each day and harder to take down.

You are crazy if you think the Republican establishment would prefer to "tear the party apart" and "create permanent fault lines" instead of just punting the election. The power brokers aren't going to destroy their party over their hatred of Newt. If they can't stop him from winning they'll try to make appeasement deals on VP nod and potential cabinet appointments and then cross their fingers. They'd rather him fail to get elected as the candidate than to rip the party up by going nuclear to accomplish...well...nothing.
