Even if it is, that's beside the point. They need to prove that's the case and MegaUpload is complicit before they should be able to shut down the website. That's why we have courts. It's been completely circumvented yet again, the same thing that SOPA/PIPA would've enabled.
No, with SOPA the burden of proof was on the website or they would be shut down in 5 days. The DoJ had an indictment, they proved their case to a grand jury. What did they circumvent?
Not quite, but pretty close probably. After reading some of the indictment stuff and commentary on it, it's hard to feel bad for Megaupload. When it got to the point they were actually paying/rewarding people who would upload more of the copyrighted stuff, they threw all the usual defenses out the window. The anti-SOPA/PIPA folks should actually be mad at these dudes. They are basically giving the politicians all the excuses they could ask for.
The biggest winner is the p*rn industry. One less place to get x rated movies, only approx 20,000 more sites left to go.
This got shut down because it's awards season. Critics get screeners of all the movies up for awards (even those still in theaters), and those screeners almost always get leaked to the internet. The MPAA inspired this raid, and the Feds are just their lapdogs.
wow that was pretty catchy. not sure if kim kardashian or floyd mayweather really use megaupload though
Who's an "artist?" The dude down at my cafe who plays a guitar and sings his own songs - is he an artist? Does he register? Would you necessarily call p*rn "art?" Your plan has a lot of problems, and it's one reason I'm relatively more sympathetic to SOPA - I don't like it, but unlike a lot of people, I do believe it has good intentions, it's just that a bunch of old Congressmen don't really understand it.
I've got a better idea. How about we don't take crap that doesn't belong to us? Just because it's on the web doesn't mean it's yours. Who am I kidding. That's not going to happen. These days it's take what you want because it's all about "ME". What a **** generation.
Oh yeah, blame the generation. The only reason older generations didn't steal stuff is because they couldn't, the Internet had not been invented yet. Blame humans in general. All humans are about "ME"
Don't blame humans in general. I fall into the human category, but I don't fall into the thief category.
Better, but they still seized millions of dollars of their assets and shut down the site based on unproved accusations - without a trial. (The same power Obama got over US citizens with the NDAA - indefinite detention without a trial)
Not defending their actions because I don't know enough about it, but doesn't this sort of thing happen all the time with individuals and businesses? Once an indictment is delivered against a business or individual, assets are frozen or seized, individuals jailed, etc.?
Absolutely. Bernie Madoff's operation wasn't shut down and assets weren't seized when he was convicted - they happened when he was arrested.
Forfeiture law expansion got going big in 1970 for the War on Drugs. So now the government gets to keep what it takes even from the innocent. $$$$ is the end game and the measurement of success - instead of law enforcement. "It's a profit deal!"
People need to call for Chris Dodd's head. Talking about the corruption of Hollywood and their bribery of politicians. http://www.deadline.com/2012/01/exc...ions-because-of-administrations-piracy-stand/
Leap of Faith, Steve Martin? (what do I win?) It was more difficult to copy-then-sell and to find peeps who could buy it. Man, this is still rampant in MEXICO, where U.S. movies are available on the mercados and pulgas as soon as they're at the theater. I DON'T BUY THOSE.
