I have always wanted to go and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions displaces to eat, visit, what's the best way to get around? We are staying in a hotel in time square.
Staying in Times Square isn't so bad if it's your first time there. Check out John's Pizzeria on 44th Street. Mainly a touristy crowd because of its vicinity to Times Square, but the food there is great. Also, there is a great bakery called Bruno Bakery near NYU. If you want to experience more authentic NY food, I'd recommend going to Queens or Uptown Manhattan. There is so much to do. I'll list a few things that come to mind: Times Square Broadway show Empire State Bldg Wall Street Rockefeller Plaza Central Park Battery Park Liberty Island Ferry/Statue of Liberty Brooklyn Bridge Meatpacking district Madison Square Garden to watch a Knicks game if possible MoMA and numerous other museums Have fun!
I went a couple years ago and found most advices in this thread are accurate. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=167924&page=1&pp=20
If you are going with your girlfriend and wanna get laid quick, stay near Broadway or Times Square. If you are going alone, then you are weird.
Amen! But I do agree about the subway, easily the most efficent method of transportation. Only $2.50 for a ride, just make sure you have small bills to pay. Many ticket machines don't give change. Also, be prepared to walk fast and push through crowds. If you like middle eastern- eat at a Halal guys cart, but only one of their carts! Don't eat at a ripoff. John's Pizzeria is amazing, I ate at the one in the village. If you're looking for a bar with cheap eats, there's a nice dive bar in South Street Seaport called Jeremy's ale house. It's unlike the rest of the Seaport- which is very posh. This place has counter service, bras on the ceilings, beer in stryofoam cups and the probably the smallest bathroom I've ever seen. Like I said though, the food is good and cheap. A bacon cheeseburger and fries is like $7, and they have excellent seafood. Also, stay out of Washington Heights.[/QUOTE]
One of my favorite haunts in NYC is Hi Life on the Upper West Side... Amerstdam and West 83rd, I think. Good little restaurant/bar. The bartenders are heavy handed, they don't put mayonaise on their made-to-order burgers, not expensive, and it's a very chill atmosphere.
Here are my tips: 1. Eat out. Lure, Minetta, Freeman's, Ivo&Lulu, & Tasty Hand-Pulled Noodles are all on yelp. Check them out. Don't be afraid to splurge. Chances are you won't find a better meal for you money anywhere else in the U.S. 2. When you're in Manhattan don't walk around in a daze looking up. It annoys me and my fellow NY'ers who are trying to go places. 3. Use NYmag.com or some other site to check out what events are going on. There is a good chance there will be an exhibit or performance that is happening when you are here. 4. Don't worry too much about seeing the tourist sites like the Statue of LIberty. you could spend your whole trip in one neighborhood and I guarantee it would be more memorable than doing the Time's Square, Ground Zero, Liberty tourist march. 5. Have fun! Remember your designated driver is your cabbie. Tip him. Oh and tip waiters 20% please. It's an expensive town to call home.
