Draft a WR #1, see if you can get a Brandon Lloyd or Pierre Garcon for Jacoby's price, and hope LeStar Jean turns out to be a stud in the rough. WR depth problems solved. Keep Mario. I know the secondary could use a little more depth, but quite frankly this defense is already one of the top 2 units in the league. You add Mario's unblockable beastitude to an already dominant group of JJ Watt, Connor Barwin, Brooks Reed and Antonio Smith, and no quarterback in his right mind will ever look forward to playing the Texans again.
As someone who followed the Redskins for the last six years, I can say Rogers is a tremendous cover corner who would always be in position for the int. He dropped a bunch of ints during his tenure in DC. This season, I believe he's made a bunch of ints for San Fran or Seattle (forgot where he went), which I chalk up to the due theory. He's solid, but why would his current team let him go?
No, we would not have to cut Ryans. Contract numbers go down slightly with new long term deals. Teams just give bigger signing bonuses which don't count against the cap. Salary cap increases big time in 2013.
Not true. Signing bonuses do count, they are paid up front in full (normally) but are spread out evenly across the length of the contract for cap purposes. In the event of a trade or cut, the "remaining" bonus is accelerated to all hit in the current year. That's why teams shy from cutting a guy if it'll result in a bad cap hit.
Texans' Not Incredibly Optimistic Statements About Keeping Mario http://blog.chron.com/ultimatetexans/2012/01/evaluating-the-texans-front-office-got-it-done/ Rick Smith “Anybody who knows anything about our team knows how significant Mario’s contribution has been. We would love to have him back. It goes without saying he’s one of our best players. We’ve got some constraints with the salary cap, so we’ve got some challenges.” Gary Kubiak “Obviously, Mario is a tremendous player. I know Mario wants to be with this team. He’s always worked extremely hard and been a very positive influence on this team. We’d like that done tomorrow, but that’s not how it works. It’s going to take some time, and we’ll just let the process take care of itself.” Both sound a lot to me like "we'd love to keep him, but...." Other
^ That just sounds like typical GM/coach talk and they are describing the situation pretty accurately. They do want him back but they also can't do so at all costs. Unfortunately, they know that losing him is a possibility depending on his demands or what he gets offered elsewhere
They would have to restructure every contract on the entire team to have cap room to sign Asomugha or Joseph! Signed, John McClain, late July 2011
Seriously. LOL He said they didn' t have the cap room to sign Joseph or Manning and that they had to major restructuring to make it happen. With Mario's massive cap number coming off the books they don't have any cap room? LOL Like I said last year will say every year, smart teams who have good capologists know how to work the cap. You obviously can't sign everyone and eventually you hit a limit, but I don' t have any reason to believe the Texans couldn't finagle the cap to sign a big time player if they let Mario walk. Particularly when the cap is going to shoot up in the next few years.
The 23 million figure is pretty recent, before the season ended all I heard was 20 million. But nobody's shown their work under the new CBA why it's so high when he's coming off a salary of 13.8 million.
The more I think about it, if you re-sign Mario, you can pretty much throw any CB out there and the defense will be alright. Def think 1st round pick goes for a WR and maybe a 2nd rounder for Feener. We can never have too many TE.
Agreed, I can only think maybe Tampa's group was almost as bad this year by the numbers, but Benn and Mike Williams and Parker are all definitely better than Jacoby. Rams before Lloyd showed up definitely worse though.
It's funny how people are boasting about our "#2 defense without Mario". We had one of the weakest schedules in the NFL this season. Down the stretch we were getting pressure but not sacked, and guys were gassed at the end of games. I would much rather tackle our tough schedule next year with Mario as a Texan.
While I agree that the texans had a weaker schedule in terms of playing offensive teams, you can't fault them for doing what they were supposed to do, i.e. hold those teams to few points and few yards. Down the stretch the texans had 3 sacks against indy and the titans. Not to mention 4 against the Bengals and 5 against the ravens...how many more do you want? I do want mario back, btw, i'm just not understanding your criticism
