i think it is possible.... and for arguements sake lets just say we add in both 2nd rd picks to sweeten the deal.... or an asset... we could get into the top 3 if we desire to... still you choose pick top 3.... any other time i completly agree with you.... but we could get kidd-gilchrist at 7 which is a beast to say non the least... and possibly meyers leonard or austin rivers at 14... the top 3 is Drummond,Davis,Barnes... top 5 add Sullinger,Lamb Those are all #1,#2 drafted type guys(sullinger would have went one or two last year)....but this is how deep the draft is... Kidd-Gilchrist would easily be a top3 pick in any other draft...to get him at 7 is a steal... and to add another quality starter in either meyers or rivers would be sweet....
Bima I think you will find that the trade market varies pretty wildly when teams trade up or down in the top 5. I was just going over it and there is no consistent value for a high draft pick. #2 pick Lamarcus Aldridge was traded for #4 pick Tyrus Thomas and Victor Kryhapa (sp?). The #3 pick Deron Williams was traded for #6 Martell Webster and the #27 pick Kleiza. The #5 pick was traded with 2 decent players (Wally Szczerbiak and Delonte West) for a frachise player and future hall of famer in Ray Allen and a swap of second round picks. #2 pick Okafor was traded for #4 pick Livingston, #33 pick, and salary relief in the form of Charlotte taking Peja Drobnjak (a funny guy) in the expansion draft We got #2 pick Francis for Dickerson (#14 pick), future 1st rounder which was a #13, 25 year old back up Othella Harrington, corpse of Antoine Carr, and 30 year old back up Brent Price.
in your first 4 examples, teams with already very high lotto picks were able add other assets and move up into the top 3, or get a bonifide franchise player. We will not have a high lotto pick (likely a late lotto pick, if we have any lotto picks at all). And we certainly don't have a Ray Allen on this team (although Lowry's value has got to be going through the roof right about now). I don't think your last example tells the whole story. We all remember that Francis forced his way out of Vancouver by refusing to play. That destroyed their ability to get anything remotely close to fair value for the Franchise. Without a malcontent Francis, you would never have gotten Vancouver to pull the trigger on that deal. To me, in order to move into the top 3, you have to have a top 7 pick, and in order to move into the high lotto (3-7), you'd likely need a franchise-type player, or a couple of borderline allstars, and maybe a mid-round pick. Of course, it all depends on how deep and talented the draft is, so nothing can be said in a vacum. But for those holding out hope that Houston can somehow net a Dummund or an Anthony Davis, I think it's gonna be almost impossible.

Still can't believe how bad Boston has been to start the season. Knicks stinking up the joint does us little good if they still hold onto the 8th seed, protecting it as no better than a 15th pick.
Basically, the Knicks pick will most likely end up replacing the draft pick the Rockets traded to NJ (if the Rockets make the playoffs, which is obviously a huge question mark in the tough Western Conference). Obviously, the McGrady trade returns (Hill, this pick, 2011 pick swap) turned out to be rather less valuable than we hoped, but a mid first rounder for, essentially, taking on Jared Jeffries' salary for a season is not bad.
Well, I really view the deal as two separate trades: Martin for Landry and Eating Jeffries' contract for Hill + the draft considerations. I know for salary purposes they were one deal, but they could have arranged them differently (in fact, I think the Rockets had a deal work out where it's McGrady+Landry for Martin+some expiring contract before the Knicks decided to rejoin the party).
We need to help out Milwaukee, Atlanta and Boston. Short-term help for picks. The Bucks are the only team that didn't make the playoffs last year but can this year.
Martin for Landry wasn't a straight up swap, IIRC Sacto got other stuff from NY, like dumping a foreign pg on them (forget his name). In any case, getting Kmart wouldn't have been possible without getting rid of Tmac, so for all intents and purposes it was one deal.
I just don't see 8 teams with a better record than Knicks this season without catastrophic effects in NYC. I am hoping the pick is "as high as #18" and that it can be flipped with _______ for a real asset. For that matter I just don't see at least 8, maybe 10, teams more likely to finish with more W's in West than the Rox. And I am pollyannaing that the Commish will serve payback for Pau/Nene no-no with a Top-3 pinger ponging result (sigh).
I really couldn't understand why half the board (DM included) wanted to trade away half the team for that dude. What a loser!
Exactly... unfortunately. Seemingly playoff locks in the East: Chicago, Miami, Orlando (even with trade deadline Howard trade), Atlanta, Boston (i know they've started out horrible, but hard to imagine them missing the playoffs) That's really it. But if you feel comfortable based on early season results, you can say likely playoff teams: Philadelphia, Indiana But even with that, even if you say NY has to fight to get the 8th seed, that still means one of: Cleveland, Milwaukee, Toronto, Detroit, New Jersey, Charlotte or Washington has to beat them out. What Cleveland has done is impressive so far, but not that impressive. they have one of the easiest strengths of schedule so far, and hard to believe they'll hover around .500 all year. I think the Knicks pick ends up being 16-18. But better than nothing.
I still say we wont loose our pick to NJ there is no way this Rocket team will have a pick higher than 14.

The Knicks have serious implosion potential IMO. Chandler is playing the most mpg since 08-09 when he only played 45 games. Amare is not the same player as he was last year either. Baron Davis isn't saving anything. The dude had back surgery and he is almost 33.
