The fact that any of you is trying to defend the captain just sickens me. It's not about romanticizing the job or any bull**** like that. The captain is in charge of every single person on that cruise and it's his job to put their lives ahead of his in a moment of panic. The fact that he jumped on a life boat, stalled going back up to the bow and made up bull**** excuses (fell onto a lifeboat? Really?) just makes things that much worse. Had he stayed up there, did everything he could to save as many lives as possible this wouldn't be as bad as it came out to be, even though it's still his fault for getting the cruise too close to shore.
nobody defended the captain. you and others are doing exactly what Carnival wants: blaming one single person for the entire catastrophe, and amazingly (and successfully) diverting all blame away from their company.
I'm sorry did the company tell the Captain to veer off of it's regular route and honor a former member of the cruise? There are reasons why the captain is to blame for this whole thing. He's the man in charge he makes the calls, if **** falls apart obviously it's his fault. Nowhere does it say that his crews were under staffed or under trained. He made a judgement call to go closer to shore and **** hit the fan, and when everybody was trying to evacuate, he made the job of his crew harder by abandoning ship and "stumbling" onto a lifeboat and leaving. You know how everything falls apart in a battle when the leader goes down? This is exactly that situation, except the leader didn't go down he ****ing RAN AWAY.
Here's a good read from CNN. Ex-Coast Guard Chief: Captain failed in every way Article is in spoilers, but in a nutshell a retired admiral and former commandant of the US Coast Guard writes about how Schettino failed his duties as a captain, and at the end of the article mentions that an off duty captain Bosio stepped up and helped the cruise out while Schettino was running away. Please tell me again why you think the captain is just a scapegoat again cardpire? Spoiler
Carnival Cruise lines deserves a lot of blame for under training the staff and also for hiring Schettino and giving him command in the first place.
Actually Costa deserves the blame along with the captain. Carnival Cruise Lines has nothing to do with it. Costa is a company with its own executives, etc..but is owned by Carnival Corporation who also owns Carnival Cruise Lines along with others.
When 1 person causes an entire chain of tragic events, then yes, you can blame him. No matter what happens in life, you can never be ready for the actions of one reckless person.
i question whether the captain is 100% to blame for the accident itself...especially when it comes out the company authorized a similar maneuver last year that was actually a closer pass. something stinks here imo.
by your logic, you may as well blame the person directly responsible for his hire, or the person directly responsible for that persons hire, then the person responsible for that person's birth, then adam and eve, then god. this guy was an awful captain. that much is fact. but it's as if people are trying to get peace of mind by wanting one person blamed for everything that happened after the ship was wrecked. "The hiring and screening process will be more thorough following this. This will never happen again when I'm on a cruise ship. This is the last tragedy of its kind. Good thing this happened when I wasn't on the ship. This should put airlines on alert not to hire a bozo pilot too. All my flights will be much safer now since this red flag was raised. All they have to do is never hire a bad pilot and planes will never crash". sorry folks, you are kidding yourselves if you think only one idiot was to blame for this entire catastrophe. that's what you want to believe, but it's an impossibility for it to be the case.
That is not logic, that is grasping at straws. Could you at least put up a better response instead of making yourself sound like an idiot?
