Maybe but we've also had the stronger opponents. Fighting Thunder 2x, Spurs 3x will lower your defensive scores. Right now Minny is slipping at 97.7. After the beatdown of Detroit our defensive efficiency will probably be better.
Minnesota's defense may be better on paper right now but by the end of the season they will be back into the mid 20s. We have had the toughest start to the schedule than any other team.
Rick Adelman is still a better coach, but I am glad that McHale has finally figured out that running Scola out there at center is not going to work most nights. DD
LOL - not the same team at all, there is only scoreboard in your head. Or shall we point out career records? Come on Reek, you should be better than that. DD
Through 14 games of 2010-11: Record 4-10 Points Against: 107.8 Through 14 games of 2011-12: 7-7 Points Against: 97.8
Just gonna point out that we have the best defensive (and overall) starting lineup in the league right now, giving up 77 PP100. Small sample but w/e.
Please then give us the CORRECT data we can use to compare the two. Records of the teams today? Nope. Records of the same team a year apart? Nope. But apparently pointing out their career records is ok?
I think the point is that the data does not exist. The only comparison will be what preconceived notions we all have already. DD
Why point out careers when the only thing that matters is the present? When Adelman established his career he was still 40-60 years old, he's already 65 and well past the retirement age. There's been some decline due to age in his coaching acumen. That's like saying at 49 yrs old Clyde Drexler is still better than Kevin Martin because if you looked at their careers Drexler is HOF while KM is not. Also before the season started a lot of Rick the ruler supporters were saying Minny has got tons of talent and RA will be the one to tap into all that potential.
Adelman's defensive philosophy is efficient offensive possesions lead to efficient defense. Meaning, if you score effectively, then your defense has a chance to get back and setup correctly. Adelman, has always coached the top offensive efficient teams in the year after year. However, after watching years and years of Adelman run teams, I can tell you that he does not hold players accountable on the defensive end like a coach like McHale or better yet,... Sampson in this case would hold their players accountable and fix silly mistakes like the ones Scola and Martin would make time after time again last year and NEVER were corrected on. Simply because Scola and Martin's offensive efficiency in Adelman's offense would win him games more than not. As for McHale, his coaching and defensive philosophies are much much different. His biggest knock now on defense has been getting everyone to sprint back on defense. However, he has already got the starters to jump on board, and next up will be the bench to improve dramatically in that area. If the offense isnt going to be perfect, its going to be real tough when you jack up threes to guard wing players who are leaking out on the break. The Rockets give up way too many points in transition. Just a tiny sample on the differences, strengths and weaknesses of both coaches so far. So yes, an Adelman coached team gives you the best ability to win right now during the regular season. McHale and his assistants have a way to go but they are still the right coaching staff to have coaching this team into the future.
people forget, on purpose, that when we had glorious yao, we ranked up there with San Antonio. ANd that's with rick the ruler. Mctalky sounds good in his pressers though. I just want to give him a high five after hearing him speak. =/
Based on this logic you won't be able to compare any player. You can't say Lebron is better than Trevor Ariza they have always played in different teams against different competition.
Good post. I think this is the main difference between Rick Adelman and Mchale. RA is a player's coach, and he lets his players figure it out. If they don't he decides they're useless and benches them. Mchale is a lot more hands-on, and he won't hesitate to discipline players when they don't perform as expected...which is ok, as long as he tells them what to do correctly next time (which he seems to do). RA is better with veterans who already know what to do and like a lot of freedom to improvise, teams like the current Lakers or Celtics or the Webber Kings. Mchale is better for younger players and rebuilding teams.
You certainly can say that, and if you believe it, great, and I am sure there is some made up advanced metric that might even show it, and give someone the ability to go "SEE"...... Opinions are like asses, everyone has one, and if it is not yours it is cracked. DD
Um, exaggerate much? Phil Jackson. Gregg Popovich. Jerry Sloan. Larry Brown. George Karl. Don't get me wrong, he's definitely got a resume head and shoulders above McHale's, and you can argue he was screwed out of another trip to the Finals with the Kings, but with the exception of Karl - whom I think is at least Adelman's equal from a resume standpoint - the other 4 above I think would definitely rank above Adelman.
