He didn't cause the rest of the crew to bail. He didn't cause the crew to not be trained He didn't cause Carnival to not have the right equipment He didn't cause the 3rd 4th 5th in command to bail as well He didn't cause the ship to be designed to be top heavy
Him bailing sure made it an easier choice for them. Can't argue that since from all accounts they just freaked. Who says they didn't have the right equipment? Someone further up in this thread who thought they should have a system that takes automatic control of the ship when it sees it going off course? You seriously think they should have equipment in place that takes control in case a stupid ass captain decides to go off course? Him bailing sure made it an easier choice for them. Where are you getting this from? Are you some nautical engineer?
:: Click here for our graphic sequence to find out how the cruise liner ended up on its side. http://news.sky.com/home/interactive-graphics/costa-concordia Didn't realize how shallow the waters were. That's insane. Even with that rock sticking up from the ocean floor.
Is that graphic sequence missing a step? Didn't the captain, after realizing what was going on hitting a rock and taking on water, navigate the boat to a position where it could settle closer to the island? Or, did the ship just strike the rock and basically lean over right where it struck the rock or nearby with no positioning of the ship?
You'd have to be one cowardly douchebag to run your ship into the ground and then head straight for the lifeboats.
I've actually heard stories that a lot of the crew did their jobs to help evacuate and didn't just "bail". I think you're confusing not being trained vs. not having leadership. I'm sure they could always use more training, but I think a big part of this all is lack of leadership from above. Right equipment? I've heard that they had difficulty with some of the boats because the boat listed so far, but i havent heard "wrong equipment" tossed around. Again, the 3rd and 4th in command were just following poor leadership. It starts at the top. Top heavy? new one to me
So... I'm in the process of booking 2 cruises for the coming year. 1 Western Carribean cruise for this October and 1 Mediterranean cruise for next April. Seems like a good time to catch some cruise deals in the coming months.
The guy took the job as a Captain, he took the money for the responbility, and then bailed....on his job. Horrible. DD
If they are able to salvage the boat, they will rechristen it I'm sure. Dollars to donuts, 99% of the people who travel on it in the future will have no idea which ship they are on.
