Rule changes to stop Kobe and Shaq made the league "small"...back then you had a different 3 second violation, handcheck was allowed. zones were disallowed (this was the biggest killer, it discouraged superior one on one players from being effective and promoted fast pace team ball...1 on 1 play is which MJ Milked 6 championships off)
Wade isn't big enough to exploit it, heck the Miami back court is pretty damn small, but it's not like you'd pull Wade because "he's kinda small for a sg"
Is only done by mediocre teams that don't have a decent SG if I see it correctly. Not a winning formular to go with two small guys, hurts the team defense cause the frontcourt has to rotate to help.
But if you look at last year's finals, both dallas and miami were running two small guards at the same time.
...which is why I posted this thread. It was about two small guards. Not an entire small unit, or what is commonly referred to as Nelly ball. I don't consider small guard lineups gimmicks. I consider small lineups gimmicks, that is, small forwards and a PF playing center, that's a gimmick lineup. With today's rules, it appears that one possible staple of a championship team is to be able to play small guards together. Not any two smalls necessarily but two smalls that are mismatches on offense and can hold their own defensively using their quickness and strength.
Its because these big 2 guards are all perimeter guys with no post up. In the golden age of the 80s, the guys like clyde, mike, and even guys like pierce would post you up. Now days with everyone wanting to either shoot 3's or drive, those 6'5 sg and up are running around like smaller guys. Mitch richmond would abuse martin, billups, and these other small guys in the post.
I don't consider Wade a small guard, he is bulked up, much like Jordan. Plus both teams lacked a good backcourt.
Jordan is a couple of inches taller than Wade. Wade's game is more about getting the hoop, so I don't see him taking advantage of smaller guards.
Great point, someone is going to come in with a post game and kill at that position..... Didn't Brandon Roy have a little of that? DD
So true, unless you were Seattle you were not allowed to double team a player without the ball, not the case any longer. DD
Ahhh, the post up game. So, you can't really do small against a dominant guard that can post you up unless you can defend the post up.
