Meh, I'm pretty good at this like I am at most things. The nfl contracts have a lot of funny money, but the most important number is guaranteed money in the 1st 3 yrs of the contrct. Right now, most teams have been doing half in guarantees. So let's do this. The avg for top pass rushers is about 10-12m per yr. Pass rushers are the 2nd or 3rd highest paid players. This foolishness about letting williams go needsto stop. Now if you're scared of his injuries, his contract structure can take care of that. Let's start with a 6yr 72m deal with 36m guaranteed in the 1st 3 yrs.The texans can give williams a 6m roster bonus due 1st day of the calender yr and a 6m salary. Now after the 1st 3 yrs if he's injured, they could cut him and have 0 cap hit or owe 0. If he plays well and doesn't get hurt, then his contract is market value. Fosters deal wll be less than the williams deal. Something like 6 for 60 with 30m in g jack. Properly managed teams don't let their all pro types under 30 walk out the door.
According to Charlie Casserly, Texans say they want to keep him. 22 million to franchise him. OK, back to Ravens/Texans
hope that's true.. put me in the boat with " I want to see what he can do for at least a full year in Wade Philips defense". Being the largest OLB in NFL history is intriguing and deserves a chance to see if it works. (And while I love Reed.. They'll need to double Mario more often than not)
If we could keep both that would be nice If I really have to pick one I definitely would keep Foster, he is amazing, the best RB in the league!
With the pressure this D-line gets on QB's and as well as they do generally against the run, I can not imagine making an argument for paying another defensive lineman the kind of money Mario will command in a league where there's a salary cap. Our resources are not well spent on retaining Mario at this point. Can you imagine the DL playing any better WITH Mario than they played WITHOUT Mario? If you want to add depth at DL, I'm all for that. Do that through the draft or with cheaper free agents. But there are some real holes on this team that could be addressed with the money you'd otherwise spend on Mario.
As much value as Mario has for us, he would be of even more value to a team that runs a 4/3, especially one with a glaring need at the DE. If someone were willing to give you more that what it costs, then you trade him. Even more so if it saves you cap room to use on areas of greater need. I see Mario as a trade asset. I think Mr. McNair will reward Foster and make up some of the uncompensated value he had from this year. It's fair, it would be popular among the fans, his 'star' value to the team will get us on some national TV games next year.
You people are crazy to want Foster over Williams. RBs have a self life of a loaf of bread. Williams have about 6 or 7 more years of good football left in him while foster have 3 maybe 4.
convince mario to take a home town discount so he can be apart of this great defense we having going into next year. if he doesn't take it let him walk.
Remove Williams from this squad right now and you still have a kick ass defense. Remove Foster from this squad right now and you'd be shut out yesterday. Pay Foster like RB's of his ilk. NFL contracts generally aren't guaranteed anyway.
I'm a huge mario fan and hope he stays, but considering that the texans still had a top 3 defense without him is very telling. Do you think the texans have a top 3 running game without Arian? Usually, the argument of the life of a RB is a valid point, but when the RB is as good as Arian you take the RB. He can easily give you 4 to 5 years of very high caliber of play. Especially with a backup like Tate who can help keep him fresh.
I doubt its an if/or situation. Texans can keep both if they want AND continue to upgrade their other positions of need. For those who don't think that, break down the salary cap and show me where there isn't enough money for everybody? Personally, you don't let guys like Foster OR Mario walk for nothing (I know Foster can't walk anyways if the Texans want to keep him). Mario is very talented. He makes this defense BETTER. Sure, they're good without him. So what? I'd rather them be better with him.
IF you don't have to make sacrfices elsewhere, I have no problem with bringing him back. If it's possible to make significant upgrades at WR2, CB2, K, and P (I guess this depends on Hartman) and still be able to pay Mario, then great.
Foster is a must keep, Mario is a for the right price keep. The defense was way better with the guys that are playing now, as they go all out all the time, Mario does not. However, if Mario comes in for a decent price, then keep him, why not? He is a productive player - but I don't think anyone can watch what that defense was doing without him and wonder if maybe he isn't a tad bit overated. DD
Uh yeah, I accidently chose Mario...FAIL It worked all year without Mario. But Arian has a talent that is hard to find in a Running Back. Give him $$$$$$ You can get something good for Mario. Resign Arian
I don't know how much cap room the Texans have, but we should Resign Mario, Franchise Tag Arian, and then on draft night trade Mario up for Blackmon. That would be flat out AMAZING. Andre, Blackmon, and Foster.
Doubtful. The offensive line deserves a lot of credit and I don't think they let the Texans get completely shutout.
Yeah the offensive line deserves credit, but I dont see ben tate or derrick ward running over 100 yards against that baltimore defense, and without foster, the ravens would go for yates without covering the RB.
