Hard to say. He's got good awareness and presence in the pocket and some mobility. But he has some accuracy issues, tunnel vision at times and made some very poor decisions down the stretch. Still, he is a rookie and if he improves in those areas he could be a solid starter.
Its too early to tell, he is still a rookie, so he can learn how to read a defense, and other things.
Yeah, I agree with this. He is Schaub with a better arm and mobility/pocket presence, but with way less experience. Especially in the kind of offense the Texans run. Another reason why the Texans should go WR in the first round this year.
Like many rookie QBs are. This was his 8th game of his rookie year, about the time most rookies start slumping. We are going to start the season with him, as Schaub will likely start the season on the PUP list. I believe we'll see much improvement from Yates.
Provide a link that says that Schaub will be out for all of training camp and preseason... everything I've heard says that he's progressing as expected and should be able to resume working out this off season.
He's a solid second stringer now. He can eventually become a more mobile version of Schaub if he works hard under Kubiak. I see him as the QB of the future, although Schaub is definitely still the QB of the present.
I don't think he'll ever be Schaub's replacement. I think he's a solid backup QB, though. Eventually we're going to have to acquire (through draft, free agency or trade) a starting QB to replace Schaub.
How do we know what he'll be? The guy was rushed out into action and everyone got to see the VERY raw version of the guy. He should be the backup next season and hopefully not see a single snap until Sep 2013 and maybe 2014. Not sure how you can't be encouraged from what we did see from of the guy. He made BAD mistakes that were to be expected but made nice throws and showed great poise at times. The issue wasn't moving the ball, it was finishing some drives that needed to be seven.
I think the jury is WAAAAAAAAAY out on TJ Yates - keep in mind: he didn't have a full offseason with the coaches; he din't practice with the first or second team for 10 weeks; his top WR was never (IMO) 100% healthy. I would say he's a capable back-up at this point, a guy you're cool getting a start or two a season in a pinch. But I think he showed enough poise and physical skills to think he might be able to develop into the long-term answer after Schaub.
Judging from the 8 game sample size that we have, Yates has all the physical capabilities to be a starter. He has the athleticism to move around in the pocket, he has the arm, and most important - he has great pocket awareness, something you cannot teach. All his mistakes have been decision making while reading defenses and such. You can't blame him for that. Going against the Ravens defense would be a nightmare for a starter, much less a third string quarterback. I think once he gets experience under his belt and understands defenses better, he can give Schaub a run.
third string ROOKIE quarterback, no less. I think too many people bought into the Tom Brady myth. At the same time, his poor performance down the stretch - while disappointing - is not indicative of his future potential.
