I have never been into vocal jazz - why I don't know, but it just annoys me for some reason. Gonna plug (one more time) the greatness that is Sun Ra. He has probably the largest discography of any artist out there (well over 100 albums with probably 200 more that are unreleased). He was using electric instruments about a 10 full years before Miles and along with the later era Coltrane and Ornette Coleman and Ayler was one of the giants of free jazz. His stuff is not for everybody (obviously) but his 50's album, Jazz in Silhouette is a great starting point for the newbie. For the more adventuresome listener, try "Space Is the Place" (album on Impulse! and not the soundtrack).
When I was in college, I got the chance to play/rehearse with the Sun Ra Arkestra. Sun Ra having passed on in the 90s, the Arkestra is under the direction of saxophonist Marshall Allen. Me in the middle.
Appreciate you, Cannonball. Really do. Always learn something about jazz when you post. But I gotta say, with all humor, this picture reminds me of those "which one of these don't belong" questions.
I like almost all classic Jazz. Miles Coltrane Monk Ellington Ella Vaughn Billy Getz Gilberto My favorite is still Miles, Kind of Blue. Its so classic and always puts me in the right state of mind.
