Espn 97.5 David delotte announces wade Phillips pulls out of consideration of the Tampa job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
According to John McClain whenever somebody withdraws their name from the running it means they were informed that they are not going to be getting the position.
If that's true, then the Bucs are truly terrible. brb not hiring a guy even before they interview him I seriously doubt this is the case.
Speculation: McNair told him he'd get a raise if he pulled out of the interview and promised to stay in Houston, and just focused on gameplanning for sunday's game. Didn't want Wade distracted this week.
Glad to hear it. Hated he said staying in Houston was the number one priority, but was going to interview.
Normally, I hate fat Josh like everyone, but his schtick with mocking Wade about selling himself on 610am was hilarious . . .(yea it did get repetitive tho)
But I thought they were meeting Friday (tomorrow)? They decided they didn't want him before the interview?
How is having your gall bladder removed, and (probably) a lithotripsy or stent placement considered "health concerns?"
Never cared for the way this was handled. I'm not blaming Wade, but the league needs to forbid coaches from interviewing while they are still in the playoffs.
That could end up costing a coach a promotion simply because his team was successful. The Texans had to give Wade/Tampa permission to do this. They very easily could have said "wait until we're done with the playoffs." But they didn't.
I like the notion that teams can't talk to a staff member under contract while the season (including playoffs) is going. I would make it a blanket policy, even if a team is out of the playoffs (making it even). Only staff members that are "free agents" would be available for the hiring process the day after week 17. And after the Wade was acting like the town crier to put himself out there after both Bengals games, this absolutely reeks of a disingenuous statement. All of a sudden, this is where he wants to be? After all that "if you want a winner, I'm your guy" trumpeting? He got word that he was a "due diligence" candidate and halfway down their wish list, and McNair didn't like the bad press. I'm sure a raise was involved...but I'm more concerned about the possibility of McNair whispering to him in private that he'd be Kubiak's heir apparent.
Great defense or not, Wade will never sell a ticket on his own. He totally lacks dynamicism or charisma. A troubled franchise needs a face, an inspirational speaker, to lead a revival of interest.
