Obviously war is much harsher than reality...but war also provides a good portion of them with an "out". Some of my closest friends in high school joined the army, marines, etc... I'm not talking about those that go to West Point or AFA...I'm talking about the ones that would skip classes to drink or the ones that could barely cut it in high school. Whether you guys here want to accept that fact or not, we have a good number of those people that join the military, as does every country. It's an indisputable fact. If we want other countries to respect us, then we must lead by example. Doing crap like this and brushing it off as "oh it's just war"...that just leads to a perpetuation of the problems we face as a nation. Donkey, thanks for chiming in with something you know nothing about.
Damn, dude. You just won't quit. I can find the scum of the earth in every damn aspect of society from the present to the ancient past. I can probably find very embarrasing scum in your family. So I again ask, what is your point? Do you just have it out for the blood and guts of our military?
They're not trying to accomplish anything; all soldiers in war zones are a bit bonkers due to having to function with a different moral, emotional and behavioral equillibrium. To them this is like writing graffiti or stealing a stop sign.
First off, Im just responding to people who are directing comments towards me. Is that okay with you? Nothing wrong with discussing something...thats the point of a message board. My point is that we shouldnt brush off something like this...doesnt matter if its in war or not. The more we brush it off, the more it will continue to take place.
This is a forum...if you can't handle that, get a room. Unless you just don't want my .02. While I agree we shouldn't brush this under the carpet, and I'm sure brass is doing something about it as we speak, I'm not going to let you or anyone else pick on the soldiers as a whole. And your excusing the academys is VERY telling.
And if you've ever read any accounts of WWII vets in the pacific theater, you'd know that pissing on dead bodies doesn't even compare to some of the things they did/witnessed. It's just that no one was passing judgement on them in between browsing YouTube and playing X-Box live...
Lol, what? I can handle it, that's why I'm engaging in discussion....you're the one telling me I won't quit. Regarding the academies, such as West Point...sure, they shouldnt be excused, I didn't convey my message clearly when I brought them up. But, generally speaking, students who get admitted into West Point have very good credentials. They would be able to get into some very competitive colleges and universities. In other words, they have many options in life and they are choosing that path of life. In comparison, there are those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds who really don't have many options....and the military is a way for a, hopefully, better life.
It is not something that makes you proud, but it is war, so in that regard it is understandable. The really stupid part that is not acceptable is taking a video of this, are they really this stupid?
Cause Iran has no tradition of arranged marriages? And what sport is Iran exactly good for? And contrary to popular Persian beliefs, kidnapping Americans is not a sport.
This should really be in the D&D. Anyone defending the shameful behavior of these men need to seriously reconsider your values. If you still have no problem with their behavior, I hope they become your next door neighbor when they return home.
Just like the military had bad apples, so do the American Iranians...let him learn grammar and spelling first before you engage in a war of words with him. Speaking of sports...the Iranian soccer team did beat the US one time.
War is dehumanizing, that is why you should not start wars unless absolutely necessary. You can talk about all the ideals you want on the internet, but once you start killing people and see your friends getting killed, it will change your perspectives for 99% plus of the people. As far as these actions, I would not consider this way out of line, far far worse acts have committed parties involved in wars through out human history up to today.
It's a post victory affirmation of dominance, a "FU, we won" if you will. It's the same idea as spiking a football or taking off your shirt, only at the all out warfare level. Taking scalps or fingers is actually pretty historically common. It's really understandable in that context, it's just that that context is brutally insane compared to any other average people might encounter: very human yet uncivilized. It's that we have that capacity that makes it taboo. and shocking.
Well when there are a bunch of dudes that play halo and tea bag after kills, I wouldn't be surprised if one dude thought it would be funny to do in real life.
Humans have been doing stuff like this for as long as there's been wars. Nothing new. While I don't condone this behavior, we can't **** a brick when something like this happens. These kids are over there dying and killing for us. This isn't pretty, but not unexpected. Pissing on the bodies of civilians, unacceptable. Pissing on Taliban, I could give a **** less. Given the opportunity, they'd hollow out our skulls and use them as a toilet.
