I was a neuroscience major long long time ago, and it turns out there's another mechanism that will try to alarm you if parts of your body fall asleep while you're sleeping. It's a way to force you to shift, and it could manifest as a nightmare since parts of your brain is alert while you're still asleep. That nightmare in the first page is still vivid enough for me to recall.
I only had it a couple times, usually right before I wake up. I was already into lucid dreaming bc of "Waking Life" and was well read on the subject before my first experience. Despite being knowledgeable on how it happens, I was still scared. My eyes were open, I could see shadows moving and hear voices. It then felt like someone was holding me down. Prob lasted like 15 secs, each experience was about the same. Afterwards I felt exhilarated, love them.
Why did I enter this thread? I know more about this than I should, given that it has never happened to me, and it just freaks me out. I'm waiting for the night where I wake up immobile and little girls are whispering death threats in my ears.
Just close your eyes and go back to sleep. It's natural thing and nothing to be afraid of. The more you think about it the more you'll panic.
**** I'm scared after reading this This happens to me occasionally, but only on airplanes. I'll be sleeping in the airplane chair, and then I "wake up" but my eyes are still closed and I'm paralysed. Thing is, I can feel/hear everything around me. But I can't move. Nothing scary at all though. Eventually, I'll muster enough strength and I'll finally break out of it.
Never had Sleep Paralysis. I did go through a lucid dreaming phase recently, though, where I was kind of studying it, and was having them probably 3-4 times a week. I need to start doing that again. Cool stuff.
happened to me a couple of times when I was 12 to 13. It usually happens when I'm really really tired, like after a basketball game or a long flight. The shadow things didn't scare me that much, but the voices scared the crap out of me, they were so loud and you can't get them out of your head.
Same here. I remember back in high school during exams, I would fall asleep on my desk and I knew I was half awake, and half asleep or something because I could hear my classmates , and I would try to move and I just couldn't. I learned this technique where I try as hard as I can to shake my head, and it takes about 15 seconds and I can always snap out of it. I've personally never had a frightening experience, but one time I did hear background music of a song I used to like during that time period. I never thought that this is what it could have been.
Happened to me once, scared the crap out of me. There was a skeletor looking face flashing in front of eyes for a good 10 seconds and I couldn't close my eyes to avoid the image. It was disturbing.
A couple of name brand Benedryl combined with Klonopin guarantees sleep paralysis for me. Its a completely weird feeling, but I think if I could learn to take control of it I could get into astral-projection. On another note, anyone ever had or seen children with night terrors? My ex girlfriends 8 year old would make up in the middle of the night with a blood wrenching scream and run back and forth through the house just screaming. He would be asleep the entire time, but eventually she could get him to calm down. He never had any memory of it.
When I had subsequent bouts of sleep paralysis, right at the point where I dreamed I was about to die, I get all riled up as if I would confront the demons and take them down with me. that's usually enough to wake me up. Is that why you wake your life partner up?
This is why I can't watch or play horror based media. I create some messed up stuff while I'm asleep that is scarier while I'm unconscious. When I'm awake it doesn't bother me. Movies/games I choose not to indulge: Poltergeist Marylin Manson videos Aphex twin vids Spoiler don't watch this if you get scared easily http://m.youtube.com/index?desktop_uri=%2F&gl=US#/watch?v=FW-ZPTW4_IU Fear (vg) Gears of war The grudge The cell Richard d'var's chin on tango and cash From Justin to Kelly
This happens to me a lot and I'm still not used to it. My mind is conscious/awake but my body is still asleep. I can't move or speak and I get an eerie feeling that something is watching me. Most of the time I'm trying to scream or yell out so that my wife can shake me to wake up my body but nothing comes out. Total lost of physical body control for what seems like minutes. It's probably normal but it still creeps the hell out of me.
I sleep alone, but it's nice to know you guys role play with little pickles. By nice, I mean as nice as your comments are wanted in this topic.
