God I hate crappy commentators. There is no way in hell that's a flagrant foul. He clearly went for a block. Ugh.
Let me remind you...Karl Malone had a reputation for doing exactly what Nene did to Landry. So it's OK to wildly attempt a block and smack a dunker in the face resulting in him landing hard on his back. That's too wild for me. It's a slippery slop...if you allow defenders to use the excuse "but I was trying to block the ball, sorry I smacked him in the head" then how do refs know when the guy was flagrantly trying to hit the dunker in the head or not. Do you try to read intent or just go by the resuls -- dunker gets smacked in head; lands on back.
Should be flagrant, since he could never even get to the ball and there's no need to swing that arm like that. On top of that acts like he doesn't know Carl is lying on the floor.
It's 'flagrant foul' arguments like these that make me remember I sometimes hate organized basketball. Sick dunk.
Stop it! It's just a good, hard foul by a player with a stellar reputation that was going for the block and competing. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=6541363&postcount=1 THINGS I WANT TO SEE 8. Hard fouls when opponents go into the paint for layups/dunks.
It's a hard foul, but also a unnecessary one since he could never get to the ball. Watch the video again and see he could not reach it thus would only have needed to reach in the air and maybe swipe at it but not like this. The swinged his arm carelessly, it didn't matter to him whether he would hit Landry in the face. This is obvious since he didn't go over to Carl and apologize. In fact, he doesn't even bother to check who's behind him and just steps on his leg and again no reaction from him. This to me warrants a foul in today's NBA. I agree though in the 90s or 80s this would not be considered a flagrant but times have changed and with today's rules, this should be one. Guys used to hit each other like this all the time so then it didn't matter much. Also how many times have we seen Rockets get flagrants for less while they even tried to go over to the guy and see how he was.
lol...guess there is no persuading you differently since you put it in your list of things you want to see...haha Hard foul is fine. We're just calling this a "dangerously" and "carelessly" hard foul. I don't like to see players get hit in the head like that while doing an awesome dunk, and end up writhing on the floor. What is wrong with protecting a dunker from a bad injury.
No tech; he was making a play on the ball. I don't want defenders to have to jump out of the way when the guy he's guarding goes hard to the basket because he never knows when he might get a tech. A player should be able to play confident that as long as he's not dirty he won't get techs.
Flagrant and purposely stepping on his leg? Are well all watching the same clip? Nene was obviously going for the ball and the leg stepping was unintentional. Merely just a backward step and not knowing the leg was right in his path.
There are different degrees of Flagrant fouls. The word "intentional" is not used in either definition. I'm fine it not being called a flagrant, but the ref does not have to consider whether it was "intentional" or not.
Then it should be a flagrant because it was not necessary for Nene to swing his arm like that and risking hitting Landry in the face.
With all due respect, bull****. I agree with the cat calling the game. If that's not a flagrant, what is? And I'm not talking about the step on the leg, which was incidental. And HP has a great point. Karla Malone did that crap all the time. It's not like the game is played in a vacuum.
Nah, really? you think that way. Or is this sarcasm. can't tell. I'll reply anyways. Who said anything about jumping out of the way. Hakeem never jumped out of the way. But he had the decency and control to not swing wildly towards a dunkers face. Protecting players from serious injury is more important than worrying about uncoordinated whimps who worry about getting a 1pt technical foul, so they start jumping out of the way. People jump out of the way to not get posterized...not because they are worried about a 1pt technicall.
He actually had no play on the ball. Look again. He had no chance to block that. Landry's slam was out of reach. Nene's only chance to stop that was to block Landry's face and send him to the line. So, Nene did, and Landry still FLUSHED IT!
yeah, but the ref can't say "you have no chance so just stand under the rim and get dunked on" its not a break away, its in the half court offense
