They're having preliminary meetings right now. They know that the system is broke and interest is waning. The current deal expires in 2 years, so my guess is they'll settle on some kind of "final 4" once it's done.
Last nights game had a 13% rating? That was half the rating the Texans/Bengals had. Does anyone even remember who played in the Orange Bowl this year, a major BCS bowl? It's broke. Fix it.
Isn't the whole lack of playoffs due to the conferences not wanting to give up a slice of the pie to NCAA or something? Are they getting around that now? Because otherwise there's still tons of money even with lessened interest.
What?? No more Menike Muffler Bowl? No more Fight for Hunder Bowl?! No more Occupy Wallstreet Bowl?!?! NOOOOOOOOOOO
16-team playoff. All the conference winners plus at-large berths to fill out the rest. Just like FCS does it. If your team can't win it's conference and/or break into the Top 16, you really don't have a beef to complain about not getting a chance to play for a NC.
I should thank the SEC for taking A&M and laying such a stinking turd that it forces major structural change. Thank you, SEC Guy. Now go kill some trees or something.
That is exactly how it should be done. This would be hugely popular and bring giant TV ratings and money. The current bowl system and BCS games are a total bore. To me, there is no such thing as a national champion until we have a legitimate playoff system.
If they're going to do it, then do it right with 16 team playoff, but that won't happen. We'll get a 4 team playoff for the next decade or two before they realize it really does need to be expanded.
They will choose either a plus-one or an 8-team playoff using the existing major bowl structure. My guess is the former and sometime down the line it might go to 8 teams. There will never be a 16-team playoff.
That's the best we can hope for, that they'll feel the pressure to make it 4 teams and that it eventually snowballs into something more comprehensive. This whole "protecting the importance of the regular season" is a bunch of horse crap. It's a pre-fabricated excuse for why there won't be playoff. I put the odds of even a 4 team playoff at less than 20%.
I believe there's a greater probability of nothing significant changing than there is of adding a plus one. I don't know what the the odds are but my own cynicism makes me believe they're pretty low. If LSU had one, I could imagine them simply adding in a requirement that you had to win your conference in order to play for the championship and leaving it at that and call it improvement. But since 'Bama won, it may force them to do something different if they do anything at all.
Y'all will be happier with a simple +1. If there was NCAA-BB style tournament, you'd all be whining about boring games when LSU, Bama, S.C., and Georgia wind up in the final 4.
I don't know how big I ultimately want it. Maybe 8 or 12, probably not 16. For now, I'd be very happy with a plus one.
