Regardless of what Wade does, they've already assembled most of the pieces to sustain this defense for a few years. Remember, even if Wade stays, he's still a possibility to retire any given year given his age and health issues (which makes it really unlikely that a team wants to attempt to "rebuild" with him at the helm). Watt, Barwin, Reed, Cushing, Joseph, Quinn, and Manning are all great building blocks. Team needs to make a decision on Mario and Ryans. Second CB could also be upgraded, although if Kareem Jackson improves again next year like he did this year, he'll be average enough to play.
As a texan fan i certainly want him to stay, he's a beast of a coordinator. He's already very well compensated for a coordinator, but i don't think it's about the money at this point. If I'm a Tampa fan, I don't want him as a head coach. He's proven to be very mediocre at the job. Honestly can't see why a team would want to hire him as their head man. I wouldn't hire him, not as a head coach anyway.
I think it is both the system and Wade. I think the players definitely like playing for Wade. However, if he leaves I hope we can find someone that will try and continue with what has worked so well this season.
The whole thing smacks of the UH/Sumlin crap. You think Sumlin's mind was on the Southern Miss game with all that A&M talk going on? The BCS is a joke anyway but it was a distraction any way you spin it. Biggest game in Texans' franchise history and Phillip is trolling and teasing about leaving if the right deal comes along. No team ought to be able to talk to ANYONE on a staff still in the playoffs. I realize the early bird gets the worm but it affects the team, no matter what the players say.
Please... totally different situation. A&M offered the job to Sumlin as he was their #1 choice. The Bucs are merely interviewing... and of all the HC vacancies, this is the only one where Wade has gotten an interview. Head coaching has been on his mind probably well before he had his surgery (hence all the stories leaked)... doesn't look like its kept him from doing his job as a coordinator to the best of his abilities. Also, they're coming HERE to interview him... really shouldn't take him away from any of his coaching duties. There's also a huge difference between college and pro players and how they prepare for opponents. The only distraction this is causing is for the fans.
I just don't get why he would want to leave at this point in his life, especially for the Bucs. He's got the ultimate job security at this point with us...he could retire here if he wanted to. If **** hit the fan, he could even become our next head coach. And he wants to leave this great situation to go give it a run with a mediocre team and lose that job security? Maybe the challenge is pulling him away though. He probably has the itch to do it again after the way it ended in Dallas.

This happens all the time. Successful coordinators for playoff teams are usually in high demand, and franchises want quick answers when they want a head coach. Not sure why this is a big deal - teams like the Patriots have dealt with this year after year. Plus, as discussed from the beginning, it's highly doubtful Wade gets the job. He's 65 years old, coming off major surgery and is a year removed from a disaster in Dallas. This is most likely a token interview, which he gets because he's respected around the league. The fact that it's the Bucs gives me a little bit of pause, given that they want to go the opposite direction of Morris (proven) and they're notoriously cheap... but I still don't see Wade being the guy. It's a far, far cry from Sumlin and A&M.
Dallas wasn't a disaster. Phillips did better than Garrett is doing. The Bucs really respect Wade Phillips so they are gonna waste his time interviewing him for a job they won't give him? That makes no sense.
Wasn't it just a few weeks ago that people were saying "just because Wade wants to be a HC doesn't mean anyone will be interested." Now there is interest and we are saying just cause he's getting an interview it's unlikely he gets an offer. I hope you are right, but I think there is a much better chance of him leaving than you do.
I agree. However, the common perception is that Wade lost control of the team. I don't agree with it, but that's the belief. For the record, Wade left with the Cowboys 1-7 in his final season. Are you kidding? This happens all the time. It's not a waste of time. It gets Wade's name out there. It establishes him as a viable candidate, in terms of perception. This happens all over the league - veteran coaches that are well-connected and respected get interviews from teams that highly doubt they'll hire them. There's an outside chance he'll ace the interview, of course, but highly doubtful.
If Wade leaves, I would go after Mike Nolan or Greg Manusky to be the next DC. Both are 3-4 guys and have had success in the past. Manusky is a understudy of Wade from San Diego. I didn't like what I saw from Reggie Herring in the two 2 games he was the DC.
Not at all. This is exactly what most of us - including myself - predicted. He's going to get interviews because he's a respected name. That does not, however, indicate true interest. There's always a chance... but it would still have to be the right situation for both sides. So far, of all the HC vacancies (Chiefs, Rams, Dolphins, Bucs, Jaguars), this is the first mention of an interview. Jeff Fisher is going to be the coach of either the Rams of Dolphins. Romeo Crenel is the likely guy to stay on as coach in KC. The TB and Jacksonville situations are pretty bleak... and Phillips alone likely doesn't turn it around. There's probably more talent in TB, but it would still be at least a 2-3 year project, thus the reason why both teams would have a younger guy at the top of their lists. But, if everybody ahead of him turns down jobs, and he's still willing, then of course he will have to be a likely candidate... I just think its still greater than likely that he stays here. If I were the Texans, I'd start thinking hard about a replacement either way... since Wade probably won't be coaching much longer as a coordinator regardless.
You're presuming Herring would stay here. If Wade leaves, he'd probably take Herring with him to be the "token" DC (just like Dennison is our token offensive coordinator).
That is a possibility I am sure. Wade is also very high on Bobby King who he brought with him to Houston from the Cowboys as defensive assistant. Greg Manusky was Wade’s LB coach in San Diego as well so he could be a possibility to join Wade as DC as well. I don’t want to see Wade to leave but I think with a component DC and with the talent they have on defense, I think they will be fine.

Anyone stop to consider that Wade boasting about another head coaching opportunity might be a ploy to get McNair to pony up and show him the money? Wade himself has said that while he would love the opportunity to again be a head coach, he loves Houston and does not want to leave unless the stars align and the perfect situation arises. If I were a betting man I'd wager that he'll stick around Houston and nice little pay raise for turning around this defense. And he will be well worth the money.
Has any team ever head two guys act as one coach? Why not have a head coach and have Wade and Kubiak act as a tandem head coach?
