As the episode was ending, I tried to remember if the other episodes were this damn good. I ordered the bluray for a rewatch. Whoever thought to make each episode an epic 1.5 hours, that was a great idea.

They suggested that he was gay and that is what most people this day and age would deduce if they were to meet a dude like this. After watching the first episode of S2 it doesn't necessarily explain if he is or not, he could swing both ways. But it doesn't, and shouldn't matter because that episode was way better than most movies these days.
The first episode of S2 makes it seem like he was infatuated with Adler, though it would be against his personality to outwardly express this. It just doesn't seem to me like the producers of the show are trying to suggest he's gay.

As in area of expertise? Even if he meant something like "area of interest" there's nothing that shows the "area" he's referring to is heterosexuality. There's plenty of evidence throughout the show to support he meant social interaction. He doesn't small talk or engage in conversation with people he can't get any information out of. Here he just seems to be an ascetic like some of the old philosophers. Everyone remembers how smart George Costanza got when he gave up sex.
