I must admit this a cleverly disguised Where is BobFinn* post.

Anyhow, the Lebron vs the 1992 Dream Team got me thinking.

Where are the incredible team leaders knowadays? Guys who are not only HOFers but defined their team (gave them an identity) and made others around them bring their best game everyday. Basically, a coach on the court who was also the best player. Granted, there aren't too many of them throughout history, but do we even have two in the new era?

    Russell
    Magic
    Bird
    MJ

Who else? Who is on that level of team leadership to maximize the entire team?

Now, name someone after Duncan got drafted.

Good old fashion new era vs previous eras debate.

Not really, the closest I can think of is Lebron.

Lebron took a team to the Finals, and transformed the Cavs from bottom feeder to instant contenters (then back to bottom feeder), he made guys like Varajao and Gibson look like all-stars.

Maybe this isn't a lack leaders, but a lack of followers nowadays.

for the record, Magic Johnson won 3 titles on different levels in 4 years.

    HS title
    NCAA title
    NBA title

    imagine that...3 in four years.

Russell didn't get recruited by anyone except USF, then led them to 2 NCAA titles in a row. The University of freaking San Francisco!?

Larry Bird refused to play for any stupid college coaches so went to Indiana State and took them to the finals to lose to Magic. Freaking Indiana State.

MJ got Dennis Rodman to play every day so he could win 72 games, and he kept Kukoc focused because Pippen couldn't. Freaking Rodman and Kukoc.

History is so beautiful. Oh, and I do love Dwayne Wade and Kevin Durrant and this whole new era. Maybe it is not the leaders, but lack of followers with these huge salaries nowadays?

If pushed, Wade pre-lebron and Durant. Otherwise none.

I think it is differences in SOCIETY on those eras that play into it. I believe you are correct about lack of FOLLOWERS.

Everyone talks about players being selfish BALL HOGS now. Though in the 70's and back college days, the coaching approach was just like how high school coaching is now - to put the ball in the hands of your BEST player at ALL times - To LET Pete Maravich and Calvin Murphy take 60% of your team's shots EVERY GAME

There's hardly ANY way that can happen now in major Division 1 basketball, too many crabs-in-a-bucket egos, too many talents with the dream of making it. And that carries over into professional basketball as well ESPECIALLY when it involves a player not wanting anything to hurt his earning potential.

Also there was more a societal MAN code even just 2 decades ago in the Jordan/Magic/Bird era.

Magic Johnson achieved greatness by just age 23. Yet was Magic seen as a YOUNG guy? No, Magic Johnson's 23 years old was NOT the same as Derrick Rose's 23. No mistake about it he was seen as a GROWN MAN, playing with other grown men.

Even college, was Phi-Slamma Jamma seen as a bunch of kids or young men? Now its people like Lebron, Carmelo and Dwight Howard wanting popularity and fame with the emotional maturity of 13 year olds.

At what point do we call him our greatest PG of all time.

    now

Think about it. We have never had a great PG...we could say Barkley took that away....but, still

If you put Jordan there then you have to put Kobe.

I would like to see bird, magic, or mj taking that cavs team to the finals. Bird played with 2 HOFs. So did magic. So did mj.

Those guys were all closers and winners. Lebron is a regular season guy who freezes up in the critical moments. Not sure what your point is.

Lebron scored over 20 straight for the Cavs to get them to the Finals.

Not sure what your point is. Shockingly, Lebron has played more than 6 playoff games.

LeBron when he was on the Cavs.
Wade when he was on the Heat.
    Kobe on the Lakers.
Derrick Rose is about to break into HOF-territory. He's the only legitimate player on the Bulls Squad.
CP3 used to be on the Hornets.
Dwight Howard on the Magic is iffy imo.

Now that you think of it, I almost wish Wade and LeBron never teamed up. I loved LeBron and Wade when they were individuals. I still love Wade, but LeBron has definitely lost his luster.
