I would like everyone's opinion on this story. Plus you get to play a cop

I wanted to relate this TRUE story and get others opinion on the matter:

At a Vet clinic here in Houston they have a policy that an animal dropped off must be picked up by 5pm or face a 25 dollar late pick up fee. Its in the contract you sign when you drop off. So a female customer comes in to pick up her animal at 4:58 and the manager who happens to be checking her out tells her that's its after 5 and she will be charging the 25 dollar late fee. The lady says "No, its 4:59 on my phone" The manager responds "our clock says 5:05." After a short argument the lady calls to get the time on her phone she puts it on speaker and the phone states that it is 5:01 (a couple of minutes had passed arguing). The manager refuses to budge and says that if the lady refuses to pay the 25 dollar late fee she will call the cops. The lady says to call them and the manager does. A short time later a cop show up:

Now if you are the cop whose side do you take:

    A) The manager
    B) The customer

You can just say whose side you are on, and, if you want to, you can explain why.

If I'm the cop, I fine the manager for wasting my time.

If I'm owner of the clinic, I fire the manager, because they just lost me a customer forever over $25.

    Great answer.

Also, OP could have made this a poll.

i think a cop would kindly, but sternly advise the guy to let it go this time....

Personally, I'd be on the customer's side, but as a cop, I'd probably take the manager's side because the situation is essentially the manager's word against the customer's word. Of course, the manager seems pretty terrible. Being a dick to your customers is a pretty good way to run a business into the ground.

It makes no difference what side the cop takes. A cop has zero authority in this instance.

Definitely the customer. Time on your cell phone is usually updated by cell tower, therefore making it more accurate than some stupid clock at a person's clinic.

    Customer's always right....

As stated, if I'm the cop, I let the manager know they are wasting my time. I force the clinic to give the dog back, no fee charged. I then turn to the customer, in front of the manager, and tell them to post negative reviews of the shelter everywhere imaginable.

The cop could ask the manager if she has a cell phone, and check the time on that as well. If the manager's own personal phone agrees with the customer, then she really has no case.

Ras137, did you stay there long enough for when the cop arrived? I would have stayed just to help the customer out

New poll: Is the OP the Customer, the manager, or just a messenger?

    Manager's side.

COME ON, MOTHER F#)$^$ERS, really, it's ME... why are y'all surprised? :p

    I'll explain WHY:
Have the customer pick up the animal the next day or same day (it's the same thing), or the customer picks up the animal and pays $25, but pickets the place and urges people NOT to do business there. In the end, the manager loses that customer and MANY, MANY more just because of $25, and ends up losing many more dollars and even possibly employees because of this... and probably the same cop ends up "pretending" to be late to that same pet place when "something terrible is happening" because he will remember this time... Manager loses in the end, but I am on HIS side this time... so he will lose a lot more later.

I'd side with the customer UNLESS the same customer has been a repeat offender and is always picking up her dog late. In that case, the cost of paying OT to the staff probably outweighs the loss of the customer.

However, I probably would not have used this instant to cut ties with the customer - 1-5 minutes late isn't worth the trouble.

    B. The customer

That guy just guaranteed that she will never come back over a petty $25 charge. Short-sighted thinking

I do know what happened once the cop got there, I just wanted to hear what people thought before I gave the conclusion.

I didn't actually see the incident, I was told by an employee of the clinic whose name and the name of the clinic shall remain nameless since I don't want that person fired.
