Why was yesterday (Monday, 01/02/2012) a day off for most people?

I got the day off. My bank seemed to be off - payments I scheduled Friday didn't go through until this morning. The mailman didn't come. My buddy IMed me and said my company was cruel for not giving me the day off (although I was off, he assumed I was working). My kid was off from school.

What's up with this? It wasn't a holiday. I took the day off that they gave me but I wouldn't have cared if I had to work. So what if you 'missed' getting New Year's Day off....that's just how it rolls every seven years.

Because since new years day landed on a Sunday when most businesses are closed, they get the following day off so people aren't screwed over of holidays they should have off. Happened the same with Christmas.

Think this applied mostly to white collar workers. All of downtown was closed, but pretty much all retail, etc. outside of downtown was open.

That doesn't make it white collar, per se. Retail (and restaurants) is always brutal with time off.

Not sure, I went to work only to find out that the Chief of Staff had emailed everyone and only a few had to work.

It was New Year's Day 'observed'. Did you ask the same question on December 26?

Sure did. (although I understand that your question was sarcastic and rhetorical)

As long as I've been in the workforce, this is how it has always been if a national holiday fell on a weekend.

If not Monday, what day would you suggest people be given off for the holiday?

I think it actually depends on the company.

I've seen a company aggregate all holidays that land on a weekend and give them to the employees in one lump sum at the end of the ear. Another option is to give out floating holidays that you can use anytime of the year. As mentioned, it's very common for company's to observe it on the Monday after or the Friday before the weekend.

The unlucky ones just straight up lose the day off if the holiday lands on a weekend.

We're NOT so unlucky. We didn't work from the 26th to the 30th.

Yesterday was the Federal observance of New Year's day, similar to if any other federal holiday is on a weekend they observe it the following Monday.

It actually wasn't sarcastic - surprising, huh? I was truly curious.

Obviously you know Sundays and Saturdays are already days off for most people. Are you saying there should be no day off when holidays fall on weekends?

Because nobody would have came in if it wasn't a holiday.

Well, no. There is a day off. It just happens to fall on the day that you usually have off without pay.

I can see some flexibility there if Christmas Eve were on a Friday.

This is the kind of stuff you negotiate when you get hired on with a company.

Of course, you can opt to take a vacation day if you want.
