Gene Simmons is an ugly MUTHAFOCKER.... Dude should keep on the Kiss Make-up looks more badass....

 

They took the makeup off because the band was at a crossroad at the time. Ace and Peter had left and adding members and creating new characters was getting pretty goofy. Vinnie Vincent was the sphinx and Eric Carr the fox and it was getting hard to come up with characters. Thats pretty much why they took it off plus it was a way to drum up media attention which they needed at the time.

The last album they did before they took off the makeup was creatures of the night which is a pretty kick ass album and it was probably the most metal album Kiss ever made. Lick it up was the first record without the makeup did way better and its no where near as good an album as Creatures. Paul Stanley said they showed us right then the rock and roll is visual as much as it is an audio vehicle.
