What are the cold hard facts? For centuries the cold hard facts of science have been often proven ephemeral. Reckon that is less true now than in the 18th century.

Don't all these conclusions, scientific or religious, have too many human fingerprints on them to be held too closely?

I embrace both.... at arm's length.

    Proof? What is Proof?

Actually I think the issue with most of these arguments is the central theme.
That theme being: God versus Science.
The idea that God and Science cannot co-exist.
When you start with a faulty premise . . .. you can only go one to more faulty conclusions.

I think of it like this
When only birds flew, we looked upon it with wonder and admiration and awe.
Now that we know how it is done. . it is mundane and considered less impressive
    but
they reality is.. . it is still a wonderous and awe inspiring feat.

The more we learn about how God has done and is doing things
the less 'impressed' we are by it. . . .. so we to an extend demean it.
    Science simply gives us the how's . . . . .

At the end of the day . . the fact that is was done . . is still pretty d*mn Impressive

So . . . I have to decline your poll because I think of it like finding the end of infinity
it starts with a the faulty premise that infinity has an end . . ..

    Imagine there's no countries
    It isn't hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
    And no religion too
Imagine all the people living life in peace

Pretend every possible avenue for creationism/god to be possible is extinguished. Of course, that would literally be impossible; but all this is theoretical.
To be honest, the whole point of faith is to believe in something that is not necessarily logical or reasonable. (Once again no offense at all) So I'm just wondering if faith began to tread into believing something that is clearly false... would people still choose to believe in it?

Is that so? So you know the whole point of faith for everyone?

Faith by definition is believing in something which you personally "know" (or believe to know) is true without tangible or solid evidence. Since god has not been proved or disproved, faith is still applicable. If god were proven false in this hypothetical situation, faith would not be applicable. It would be denial. You can't have faith in something if it doesn't exist...

I did not mean to explain WHY people choose to have faith in omnipotent beings, I only defined what faith is.

Edit: Of course you could just be trolling. You initially troll then proceed to victimize yourself in every D&D thread about Muslims/Islam and Religion...

Nobody knows if the bible is true...
You can't cite miracles from the bible and pretend like it was a sure thing that it happened.
Anyone (and any number of people) can write a book

Also... god and science definitely cannot coexist... see the evolution/creation debate. There is no way that they can both be possible without disproving the other.

A lot of physics is theoretical. I'm sure that extends to a lot of the other sciences.

I'm not sure that faith "has a point" or if faith is a result of facing the unknown/unknowable. Faith comes after some pondering.

    What do you mean "hypothetically"?

For all intents and purposes, every god-based religion we have going today has been proven false. The creation of the earth/universe mythos, intelligent design, and every other notion that asserts the existence of an all-knowing/powerful being has been proven completely bunk through both the most advanced forms of scientific discovery and even the most basic logic.

Now, I don't know if there's a religion out there which worships a god that isn't all-knowing or all-powerful (i.e. infallible; not sure if a god figure can even be called a god without being that), but if there is, it's the only one that can even be considered plausible given the evidence we have. But the chances of a church that worships a guy who is clueless and screws up sometimes getting a lot of followers is pretty small.

The OP should actually be "if you learned what we already know about the origin of life and the universe which disproves the theory of an infallible god... would you still XYZ".

You can't prove something doesn't exist, however. That's the real issue. You can disprove snippets here and there (Book of Genesis is a good example), but you cannot possibly disprove the existence of something.

You can flip the question to make it more realistic though: if God were proven to be real, what would you do? Myself, as a current atheist, would believe in God because it's proven to me and is a fact. I'd seen it.

However, I leave you with my favorite Christopher Hitchens quote: “That which can be asserted without evidence, can be dismissed without evidence.”

Not true, Mr. Most. If one just tried one could easily find a belief that squares the two. I love science as much as I love my God as much as I love the idea of UFOs. It truly isn't hard...just need an open mind.

You don't need an open mind, you need an uneducated/ignorant mind. There is a big difference.

There is plenty of scientific evidence that destroys the young earth theory (which takes care of the vast majority of the religions on earth) as well as the as the concept of an infallible and/or benevolent god. (i.e. fairness and justice in this life, and the design of most organisms and our world are deeply flawed in some of the most basic ways).

Some people aren't privy to this knowledge, and that is a shame. But if you are, and you choose to ignore such evidence, it does not make you open mined, it makes you a fool.

It's funny how we often speak about what we 'know'

As if what was 'known' 200-300 years ago is consistent with what is 'known' today.

Good luck to you all on your journeys brothers and sisters.

I guess you're impling I'm uneducated, ignorant and a fool? Fine. Whatever. You'd rather claim your superior knowledge than doing a little research like I suggested. Fine, there too.

But your response is the same damn crap I got from the religious people in the first 35 years of my atheistic life, "I'm right, you're wrong!" Now that I successfully joined the two, you want to throw your scientific attitude at me? Dude, you have got to do better than that. I've said the same thing you're saying only 25 years ago, so please come up with something new.

I may not have a diploma on the wall but I do have a wealth of experience and freaking EFFORT to find answers that works.

So kindly bugger off and quit belittling people who don't agree with you.

Let me tell you how ignorant you're acting: Do you really think there is only a handful of religions in this world? Do you really think Christianity is the only IT? Just what are you basing you're religious knowledge on? Experience? Hear say?

Religious belief has nothing to do with intelligence.

Religious belief doesn't mean that you're dumb any more than it means that you're smart.

That being said - the majority of dumb people are religious.

So, being religious doesn't mean that you're dumb at all. But, if you're dumb, then you're probably religious.

It's not about my education, it's about the education of the people who found this stuff out. You know, ivy leaguers, noble prize winners, the brightest minds the world has ever known, etc. Do you believe the young Earth theory despite evidence to the contrary? Do you believe the Earth and Universe is perfectly designed as is? If so, I'm guessing you haven't critically considered the thought yet.
