Doesn't work that in a democracy....but I see the value. Problem is that a lot of times people don't agree on a long term strategy and because presidents and congressmen don't have extended stays in office or at least predictable stays, it is challenging to think long term.

We are a short sighted society....and have created a short sighted govt

Stupidity is the biggest economic and national security facing America today.

I'm with these posters. Glad to see I'm not alone in understanding that most problems can be solved if we had smarter voters.

i dont. anyone who doesnt pay their way is a parasite, fetuses included. fetus just thinks they can lay around all day incubating and stuff...i say its time for fetus to earn their keep.

i would - living children contribute nothing - they simply drain money, resources, time and energy from their parents who they are dependent on for everything from housing to food to their bratz dolls and legos.

and unemployed are parasites too, just like fetuses all they do is take and take, while giving nothing in return.

im pro-choice, but i disagree with you when you say that all fetuses should be destroyed.

Either that or women would run businesses, fight wars, play sports and be a lot fatter and hairier.

If both men and women could get pregnant there'd be no "closets" or "sanctity."

This is similar to people calling organized, established religions "cults" and then citing a tortured or overly literal definition to justify it, when the intended association is with People's Temple or Dave Koresh.

Your above post is similarly futile because when you used the term "parasite" you didn't mean to communicate any of the technical details above, but an entire layer of subtext implying that fetuses are destructive and poisonous to their mothers.

Partisan politics trivialized centuries of racial, gender, class and regional animosity into bloodless bickering about single-digit tax rate hikes and clinic services; other than the suburbs, team sports and mass communication it was one of the things that stabilized and sedated this country.

I don't think this is a problem with democracy but I agree this is a problem with our society and to a large extent our government reflects our society.

Still there is reason to hope as there have been times when our government has acted with the long term in mind. The creation of Social Security was one along with the Interstate highway system. At the same time there are certainly many in government who are willing to look at longer terms solutions. While I agree that change toward a longer term outlook isn't going to happen right away (how's that for long term thinking) I myself will judge candidates based on how much it seems like they are thinking of the long term versus the short term.

Problem is not the candidates nor the people, it is our society and the power of media. There is no denial how much influence the media has, and it literally is a 24 hour news cycle. People want results now.

Just look at the current state of affairs. We went through a massive collapse of the financial AND housing markets 4 years ago and people are unhappy with what government is doing to fix the economy and kill debt. No one says - hey, this stuff takes a long time. It's why hasn't it been fixed by now?

It is true of war, of disasters, of economies, of the health system, of congress. Everyone wants quick fixes. We live in a society were you get anything you want in 5 minutes or less on demand. Patience is lost from American culture. It's right now or bust. It's true for the CEO of a company, the president, a congressman, or an athlete.

I can't see that changing in our lifetimes.

This is a challenge this nation faces. And I wonder if this idea can truly take root in the national psyche. It would be amazing if it did. But it's hard, because sometimes, you have to act immediately, and results shouldn't take that long. So how is one to distinguish.

Heck, we spend all of our time reading and educating ourselves on all of these issues - and debating them here. Folks on this forum know their stuff far better than the average American. Right left, both sides. And yet - we still can't come towards a consensus on most things.

 well you're the one who asked. 'arts & education' would have been a more appropriate answer.

I agree, it is a problem. it is vital to any community to foster creativity. and it is important to my livelihood as well as thousands of teachers and educators as well.

fetuses are very destructive insofar as when chicks get pregnant they get all fat and unattractive. and they are poisonous too - ever heard of morning sickness?
