Today in 1845, Texas became the 28th state admitted to the Union. The last words ever spoken by a President of Texas were said by Anson Jones:

"The final act in this great drama is now performed. The Republic of Texas is no more."

(And parts of OK, KS, NM, Co, and WY were no longer part of Texas.)

“Texas will again lift it's head and stand among the nations. It ought to do so, for no country upon the globe can compare with it in natural advantages.”

A sovereign nation joined the country by treaty, becoming a state, the only time that has happened in United States history. When the Civil War broke out, Sam Houston, governor of Texas and former President of Texas, attempted to sway public opinion and, most importantly, the state legislature, to return to an independent Texas, rather than join the Confederacy. A pity that Houston failed.

I may have to take you off my smart list if you're one of those guys who thinks Texas has an out clause in their annexation agreement with the most powerful country on the planet.

Here's to hoping better times for Texas. It's not the economy or political affiliation that makes a state great. It's the drive, spirit, and attitude.

Sadly, a lot of those traits have been replaced by fear.

Not only did Houston fail, he was voted out...the freaking Washington of the Texas Republic. :(

So, did anyone else have ancestors who put this bumper sticker on their wagon, back in the day?

do you really think we're STILL the most powerful country in the world?

this isn't post WWII anymore. we're in debt. we export way more than we import. this country is the number one consumer of drugs on the planet. pretty much every other country in the world hates us, and on top of that countries say like china or india could literally come and wipe us out with their shear numbers. not that we'd even put up much of a fight, being as that so many these days are completely apathetic about national pride and patriotism.

it's really quite disturbing. I love my country, but the sooner we all wake up the sooner we can fix all this crap.

    We have a plan.

Secede followed by a blitzkrieg to go liberate New Orleans (since the US doesn't cares about her -- Katrina proved that).

Then we sign an alliance with Mexico that they've been wanted forever and go grab the Panama Canal.

Texas + the Mississippi Delta + Panama Canal + BBQ + Mexican food + Cajun + Creole

    we'd be set!!

I guess popular sovereignty is an outdated idea. If we decide to leave the U.S., we have every right to do so.

No, we do not. Not any longer. Sorry. Pouhe misunderstood my post, that's all. Before the Civil War, the states did have the right to leave the Union, in my opinion, but post-Civil War and Reconstruction? It can't happen.

I have an ancestor that was at San Jacinto, who may have later painted a sign and nailed it to his wagon, but bumber stickers probably weren't invented yet. ;-)-
