I honestly don't know, and I don't care. There are three options that I see:

    1. He's a racist scumbag.
    2. He's not a racist scumbag, but is perfectly willing to say this stuff to motivate the mouthbreathers who make up a good chunk of the racist extreme right to a degree that even other far right candidates won't.
    3. He's not a racist scumbag, but is too stupid to control content of a newsletter published in his own name for at least 5 years.

I don't know which one is true - if I had to rank them in order of terms of likeliness, then it would be 2, 1, 3 with 2 being the most likely. None of them represent a guy I would want being my dogcatcher, much less the leader of the most important nation in the world.

you previously said you didnt think he was a racist. so a month later you think he might be one?

Because Paul is honest, no one can deny that. It's a bit difficult to deal with it when we're discussing it, but like I said, I agree with Rashmon - I don't actually think he's a racist.

And the thing is, I'm with Rashmon. I actually don't think Paul is a total racist like David Duke.

and you say you dont care, but i just did a search on your posts w/ the keywords "ron paul racist" and got 17 separate posts, which tells me that you care quite a bit.

Note the language carefully - I never said I know he's not a racist, it was just I think. Also, note that the choice I said was the most likely is that he isn't a racist scumbag, but is willing to play the part in order to deal with white racists who make up the extreme right of the political spectrum he inhabits - I would really make more of a stink about the fact that the man's basically a Bircher, those crazies Buckley destroyed almost half a centry ago except that no one here actually would care about that. Also note what I said,
Paul's clearly not at David Duke level, that's obvious. But there is a level between not a racist and David Duke, and if Paul's a racist, he's there.

Secondly, I don't care in that the newsletters currently don't really sway my opinion of Paul all that much - if it turned out tomorrow that all of these newsletters were complete forgeries by the New Republic, I still would never vote for Paul, and would force myself to abandon the GOP and help Obama to stop him if Paul actually got the nomination. They were a big reason I caused myself to question him back then, but I currently disagree with Paul on a lot more issues than just a newsletter. The newsletter are just an easy and important way to strike at Paul, as other ways of striking at him can be just viewed as a political disagreement between different people.

Ehh I don't agree with him on many points but the poster he quoted infused race into the discussion.

I don't think Paul's a racist. Much like the late Senator Byrd from West V, he may have been at one time, but his views have since evolved. You have to remember, Ron Paul is like 97 years old, so he's been around since the days of the segregated south.

I did, as a jibe against the Tea Party mentality which I believe is a closeted outlet for racism. Remember, though I'm white, I grew up with, I know it and the Old F****ers still talk the same talk around me they always have..... at the Christmas Dinner table for one.

Sort of what is odd about this thread is the disconnect between Bachmann's Tea Party, which is the back to the 50's platform and Paul's Libertarian, alternate reality platform, that is anything but conservative unless your talking about conserving back to 1803.

Stormfront Founder Don Black Says White Supremacists Thought Ron Paul Was ‘One of Us’

Mr. Paul’s anti-Federal Reserve, small government platform appeals to many on the far right. In the wake of the controversy over the newsletters, he’s increasingly faced questions about his white supremacist supporters, but he has declined to disavow their backing.

“If they want to endorse me, they’re endorsing what I do or say — it has nothing to do with endorsing what they say,” Mr. Paul told the New York Times on Sunday.
