Assuming we trade Martin to the Timberwolves (which I think is coming soon) I see the following: New Orleans - same as us Cleveland - worse than us Washington - worse than us Toronto - worse than us Minnesota - better than us Charlotte - worse than us Phoenix - better than us Sacramento - same as us Detroit - worse than us New Jersey - same as us Philadelphia -better than us Denver - same as us Utah - better than us Portland - same as us Golden State - better than us If we play our young players we should easily have the 6-10th pick (barring any leapfrog lotto teams). If we trade Scola, that should move us up to 5th. Not sure that's worth it but I would like to see Patterson get more PT. Also, we might be able to package the Knick's pick with our pick and move up 1 or 2 slots. Personally I'd trade at least Martin and spread the minutes evenly across the 1st and 2nd team since the schedule is going to be a little more frantic. Then on the last 10-15 games when our destiny has pretty much been decided, we sprint to the finish line. And by sprint I mean "injuries" take the starters out and you give serious minutes to the 2nd and 3rd team. That saves the starters from a serious injury when the games don't matter, allows you to really see if there is a diamond in the rough needing real floor time and of course allows us to move up the draft order. ie We need to tank hard to use this time wisely.

Excluding the Ron Artest trade, I completely agree. I liked the Kevin Martin trade, but it definitely wasn't a blow out. We sent back a solid Carl Laundry and a huge expiring contract with the possibility of him still being great. At the time, I remember Morey saying that you can not get players at free agency. Sign and trade only, only, only. Because of this, clutchfans, including myself, thought teams freeing up cap space were idiots. It turned out he was wrong and we were wrong for believing him. He also, severely undervalues defense. He iterated several times that defense can be easily taught through the right system. This is completely wrong. This is the main reason, I believe, we were able to pick up our "undervalued" players. Brooks, Martin, Budinger, Scola (kinda, SA though his O sucked too). Also, why is he picking up all these scrubs that have been waived or in the D-league? Only one paid off by him, that is Scola. What is that, 1 for 15? Lets not mention the Battier for Rudy Gay. I can understand the win now mentality when we had our stars, but damn...damn, damn. Like you said, in drafts, he has been solid. I would say 50/50, which is amazing. At this point, I don't know if its him or our scouts.
Don't worry, a rough schedule + disastrous off-season + angry stars might make us tank whether we wanted to or not anyway.
He has been good at drafting. Brooks really is his only great pickup. Scola was a smart trade pickup....Martin wasn't bad either. I think he has had very little to work with to honestly be evaluated....but his strategy of acquiring undersized assets hasn't been all that great in payoff. And yes I am a rascal!
Really? I thought he traded a scrub in VSpan for Scola? Rafer freakin Alston for Lowry? Landry for Kevin Martin? Edit: Oh yeah..some others like Ariza for Lee and AB for Dragic The core of our team has been acquired through trades.
To become great or elite drafting he has to draft a relatively young all star that fits the mentality of this team without giving up too much of the best talent on the roster.
I've said this on plenty of threads already but I feel the need to point out that we're basically one of three "mediocre" teams that will have cap room next season... only 25 million on the cap and all of that invested in our core players (Lowry, Martin, Scola). And enough room to sign or trade for 33 million dollars worth of salary. The other two teams? New Jersey and Dallas. New Jersey would have to renounce Lopez to get there, and they would pretty much be going to battle with Williams and a bunch of mediocre role players. Dallas would only have Dirk, Marion, Haywood and Carter as key players if they want enough room to sign a max player. And both of these teams ONLY have around 17 million in room should these things happen. We have nearly double that amount next off season. So in theory we could make a move for a decent player using our cap space and slew of expirings this season. We were able to pick up Kevin Martin using Carl Landry and an expiring so going after someone like Iggy is within the realm of possibility if the 76ers are bad this year. After we make a move like that, someone like Dwight Howard or Deron Williams is going to look at the Rockets and see a team with Martin, Scola, Lowry and Iggy (or whoever we end up grabbing). Martin and Iggy are both solid number 2 options and Scola and Lowry have both proven to be very solid rotation players. With Dallas and New Jersey those players would be paired up with Dirk or Williams, but that would basically be the whole team. Compared to a Rockets team that would be a lot more well rounded. TL;DR: Now isn't the time to pull the plug. Wait a year and see what happens in the offseason when we have cap space.
