Sometimes watching the game is just not enough. The boxscore shows you the true effectiveness of each player. It helps to not have to leave the site to find it, as well. I'm hoping to keep it around for stats purposes mostly. Here are the boxscores for the 2 preseason games. Preseason game 1: http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=311217010 Preseason game 2: http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=311221024
"Someone created the boxscore, and he should be shot." - Morey Seriously, the boxscore will rarely show you the "true effectiveness" of anyone.

Boxscores definitely help. Even if just for fantasy purposes. I for one look at the boxscore after every game.
For instance, last night we saw Flynn go 1-6 and many of you are calling him garbage. If you look closely he still scored 8pts. and was responsible for 12 more. He was actually very effective while he was playing.

It helps somewhat. But the boxscore doesn't show the TRUE effectiveness of players. For example, it doesn't take into account a screen which led to a bucket or a charge etc. Many of the little things that change a game aren't in the boxscore
Agreed. So the best way to watch a game and assess player contributions is to watch for all of these little things, take note of which players contribute more and which ones less to the non-stat categories, and then use the boxscore afterwards to check out the obvious stats and adjust them for the non-stat contributions.
The boxscore is part of any formula for any metrics in deciding whom is performing well, it is not close to the end all, but neither are the advanced stats either as they are dependent upon the observations of those that are inputting the data. DD
I agree with DD. The box scores are a tool but certainly not meant to replace actually watching the game. You would be a fool to simply use the box score to decide who the best players are, but you would be a fool to completely ignore the box score as well.
Could someone give me a detailed explanation of the +/- system? I get it, but i don't know the details.
That is far worse than the boxscore....for telling value....it depends upon your teamates, and whom you are playing against.....to me that is the most simplistic stats of them all..... DD
The box score contains multiple stats, each of which also "depends upon your teamates, and whom you are playing against."
