Technically I cheated because he changed the spelling of his name in '91, but I think that can be overlooked.

I think Dream's career arc is sort of interesting. He started out as an very good offensive player who was just absurdly absolutely dominant on the defensive end. As he got older, he turned into an unstoppable offensive force who was still one of the top two (or at worse three) defensive centers in the game, but maybe not quite at the historic level of his early career.

Anyway, let's first take a look at the statistical breakdown:

    Code:

    * It should be noted that the acquisition of Charles Barkley
led to marginal decreases in Dream's scoring and rebounding numbers.
There's no question that Hakeem accomplished more in his latter years, and he took his offensive game to the next level. That said, I truly believe that the young, absurdly athletic (and hot-headed) Akeem was EASILY the most dominant defensive player the NBA has ever, and likely will ever, see. That's not to say Dream wasn't still one of the best, if not the best defensive players in his latter years, but he did have to pick his spots for when to really turn it on defensively.

So, with all that said, if given the same supporting casts, which player would you prefer to have as your #1 guy for one season: Young Akeem or Prime Hakeem?

EDIT: Also, feel free to chime in on which of Dream's seasons you think was his best.

The man entered the league, dominated from day 1 and never looked back.

I'd have to go with Prime Hakeem. In addition to his more polished offensive skills, Prime Hakeem had a winner's mentality, and while he had that mentality throughout his career, it became indomitable in his later years. Heart of a champion baby!

Impossible to answer, I've literally typed 3 or 4 answers and deleted each one.

    Nice work on the stats.

One other thing I thought I'd add, once the playoffs came around Hakeem was still able to defend like a madman.

I voted for Hakeem because of his willingness to pass and trust his teammates (Jordan averaged 37.1 points/game in his 2nd season but didn't win until he started playing the team game). Frankly, however, Akeem was the most dominant force ever at any position, so given the right coaching/complement of players, Akeem>Hakeem. Either way, you can't lose.

    Akeem.
Just because his old days cause he was gangsta and dunking on everybody. Sure everybody knows what happened later, but the old days we made it to the finals in his second year and who knows what would happened if Sampson and the crack cocaine didn't happen.

Somebody has to vote for the old school, in this case, the old old school

Man, all it took was a pipe and a freak injury to destroy what would have been a dynasty.

Wonder how that would have affected everything, Jordan probably doesn't win 6 if the Rockets have the core of Sampson-Hakeem for all those years.

If Jordan doesn't win as many, does he still become the global celebrity he is? Do people crown Kobe the best guard to ever play instead?

Do teams look at this (later, at the Spurs) and decide having two big men and three decent perimeter players is better than the all too common one perimeter player and one big man?

    So many questions!

Good points. As I recall, the 2nd year Akeem and Ralph only had Rodney McCray and some poor-handling guards who couldn't shoot consistently either, and they still took the Celtics to 6 when the Celtics were in their absolute (and dirtiest) prime. At least McHale is on our side now.
