Did the ref really give the goalkeeper a red card for defending himself against an attacking fan?

I hate to see a coach force his team to quit, but I think that is justified there.

Sadly, I think the referee acted by the rules. It's a tricky case. The goalkeeper kind of acted in excessive self-defense there. He kicked the other guy twice when he was already down. On the other hand, how was the goalkeeper to know whether the attacker had a knife or something, so he had to make sure the guy could not attack him further. I think the referee actually didn't see what happened, but his linesman told him.

The goalie was defending himself. He has no idea what a guy crazy enough to run on the field in front of thousands of people would do if he gave him a chance to stand up. Soccer hooligans are freaking insane.

I'm not sure what rules govern being attacked by morons from the stands.

The ref was the biggest idiot in this. The keeper did nothing wrong and protected himself. Good for the AZ coach for walking away from this game. If the ref could make a call that blatantly stupid, no telling what else he was capable of.

Like Leroy mentioned, I don't know what in the FIFA rule book governs such a situation. To my knowledge, there are no rules for player-fan interaction and what the ref should do in that situation. The ref didn't act by the rules.

    That's pretty stupid.

If you cross the white chalk, you're fair game to get your ass kicked. You shouldn't be there, and the governing body of that sport would probably agree too.

It's only logical for him to act that way, he was just defending himself.

    Something similar happened before, too.

That player also got a red card.

He wasn't getting attacked. But his behavior is clearly not "violent", he was just trying to stop the streaker.

I agree that the rule is stupid.

I'm always happy when the dutch league is getting atention.:(
Pathetic, that Esteban gets a red card. Ofcourse it is according to the rules, but come on.

I love that Verbeek (one of my favorite coaches) takes his team of the field. I'm really curious to see how this will play out. Will they finish the match, or will Ajax win by default, or will AZ win by default.

Pathetic, even their opponents were complaining with the ref.

Yup, Milwaukee. IIRC, that fan, who was a big guy, attacked Bill Spiers from behind and gave him whiplash (maybe it was a concussion?).

I think Mike Hampton kicked the **** out of that fan if I remember right.
