If he was responding to a disturbance, which he says he was (although the article discounts it), there are circumstances where cops aren't supposed to turn on their lights and sirens when they speed.

Well then, that makes running over someone and subsequently arresting her father perfectly ok. Thanks for clearing that up.

    No doubt. That's pretty despicable.

He should be charged with vehicular manslaughter. Police are not above the law, regardless of whether or not they think they are.

And they wonder why we don't want to talk to the police, and why we don't respect their authority. They clearly have no respect for the people they're supposed to protect and serve.

I respect hard working, honest cops for the job that they do. It is not the easiest job in the world, with that being said there is always a few rogue cops in uniforms, if all facts checked out in this terrible tragedy, we not only have a rogue cop but also a sorry police department. If anyone ran over my little girl like that, I would probably go "First Blood" on them.

Yes, he should definitely be charged. But I wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't.

And how cold-blooded can you be to not get out of the car after hitting someone and then just sitting in your car until the other cops arrive. Are you kidding me?

There is no accountability in our government, at any level, and we are paying a huge price for it. America has become just another banana republic.

And plantiff's lawyers, this thing's gotta have at least six or seven zeroes behind it. Hell, probably better to get a publicist first: shame the governor and get paid without even filing a suit. Can't touch the pension, though.

Cops really need to cool it on the non-incident speeding.

As a police officer, this story truly saddens me.

Bless the soul of that poor child.

In theory, cops should be the most accountable/culpable for their crimes. In reality, they're the least, and our society is worse for it.

Thank you for doing an important job, around this board the anti-police crowd is deafening to the level of the OWS.

And rightfully so. These abuses are getting to the point where I'd be worried to be a police officer. If things like this keep ocurring, people will start taking the law into their own hands. I'm not anti-police. I'm pro-rule-of-law. And it seems to me that the police and the courts are making a mockery of the rule of law; seems as though the law only applies when you're poor or middle-class -- and the middle-class is evaporating year by year as nothing is done to right the injustices of our system.

I live in a small but wealthy southern town and we have "rouge" police here. You will get pulled over for 5 over (got an old man (me) in a lexus riding his brakes going to down the mtn...good job). Or they get you for "failing to come to a complete stop" even though you did (got my son that way...Dad, I saw him sitting there as I pulled up. I came to a full stop (which his stops are always head bobbers anyway). Or another favorite is "crossing the yellow line" which you never did (got my friend coming home from ATL from a soccer game with his daughter at 2am). That gives them reason to pull you over. When you get pulled over, you have to wait for their backup. After that, if you don't fit the profile, you have a 20 minute stop - of them chatting - followed by a warning (for something you didn't do). If you "fit the profile" and they can't find any real reason for a search then they pull the old "hit with an odor of mar1juana (on you or when you put down your window) even though you don't. Search time. If you are not of the right color, have long hair, have bling on your car (rims, etc), too many bumper stickers, have out of state plates, day workers, etc...you are getting the shakedown.

Again I know this from actual cases from family or friends or me. And when you go to court, if they did find something they think nothing about lying to the judge to keep their "case" going. I refuse to support the police in any way until these rouge police are off the force. I wouldn't believe anything they do say even if it’s true because I've seen them abuse their authority and lie under oath to keep this small town safe. Yes they keep the crime down catching people that fit the profile but the cost is way too high.

I really didn't want to get on my soap box because I feel for the family and my life events don't even compare but police need to police themselves.

@ArtV, totally agree. Small town cops are the worst.

They make it worse for city cops too, imagine being a cop in the LA, or Camden, or Baltimore. It's hard enough as it is to risk their life to protect the community, to get people to trust the cops. Now, you got these assholes who don't do much but give cops a bad name.

There HAS to be massive lawsuits and criminal charges.

    This is insane.
