Bollywood actress Veena Malik reported missing after nude FHM photo scandal

There were fears today for the wellbeing of Bollywood actress Veena Malik after she was reported missing by her manager.

The controversial Pakistani model and actress, who is suing FHM magazine after she claimed they doctored photos to make her look nude, has not been seen since yesterday morning.

She had complained of feeling depressed, but also was the subject of death threats over the photos.

Her manager Pratiek Mehta said he received a text from Malik saying she was ill and depressed.

Mr Mehta said she had been filming a movie called Mumbai 125 Kilometers at Goregaon and was last seen leaving in a car after shooting had finished.

He added: "I have been trying to reach her since yesterday, but have failed. I have approached the officials at Bandra police station and have sought help in finding the whereabouts of Veena."

However, the police at Bandra said she had not officially been reported as a missing person..

The film’s director Hemant Madhukar said: "Veena left after the pack-up yesterday (Friday) morning. In the afternoon, I received an SMS from her where she apologised for not being able to concentrate on the shooting, stating that she was disturbed.

"I called her immediately, but her number was not reachable. I have not been able to get in touch with her since.”

Last week Malik was reported to have said the stress of the controversy had aged her 10 years.

Referring to FHM India, the 33-year-old said: “I feel completely cheated. They've added 10 years to my age.”

Malik, who appeared on Bigg Boss, the Indian version of Big Brother, created controversy earlier this month when FHM India published a nude picture of her on its cover.

She had previously been accused by clerics of immoral behaviour on Bigg Boss for wearing shorts, hugging a male actor and swimming with Pamela Anderson.

She countered by accusing the Pakistan media of having double standards about men and women's behaviour.

She claimed she only posed topless for FHM, but that photos were doctored to make her look completely naked.

Since the pictures appeared of her, with just an ISI (an acronym for the Pakistan spy agency) fake tattoo on her arm, she has been the subject of death threats from militant group Lashkar-e-Toiba.

The Lahore-based militants issued a statement saying: "She has made fun of all Muslim women and brought shame to the entire nation. Veena Malik will be dealt with accordingly on her return to Pakistan."

Spokesman Abu Usama added ominously: "Our faithful are prepared to welcome her."

And prominent Muslim cleric Maulana Abdul Qawi warned of a fatwa against Malik for shaming Islam.

Malik said attitudes in Pakistan were from the ‘Stone Age’, adding: “The things I have done in life, I have the guts to stand by. This is my body; this is my life.”

Vowing not to back down she said she was being vilified by her compatriots.

“This attitude, I’m sorry, is in the society. When they say they have become modern, grown up, that’s wrong. They still live in the Stone Age.”

In a text to journalists Pakistan’s military press office said the scandal was “the height of humiliation for Pakistan, done by a Pakistani on Indian soil”.

Veena shot to prominence last year when she accused her then boyfriend, Pakistani fast bowler Mohammad Asif, of involvement in match fixing. She also testified against Asif before the International Cricket Council.

Last month Asif was convicted of spot fixing, along with teammates Salman Butt and Mohammad Amir.

He was given a one year jail sentence at Southwark crown court for his role in the scandal, where the players were found to have collaborated in bowling no balls in certain overs in a betting scheme.

Veena Malik has also been accused by the Indian and Pakistan media of deliberately courting controversy to further her career.

She insisted she was deeply hurt by the accusations the FHM controversy had been engineered, saying she wanted “justice”.

She said: “I understand that I have been linked to many controversies in the past relating to my career. But all I’m trying to do is make a name for myself as a woman in the entertainment industry.

“I am not doing anything different to anyone else and sadly in this instance I feel like I have been used by a publication just so they can sell more copies.

“Why would I spend thousands of pounds on lawyers and legal fees if I didn’t feel like there was a case?

“I simply want justice for what has happened.”

But the coverage of the nude photos scandal has also landed her a role as an item girl for Rumy Jafry’s film Gali Gali Chor Hai.

I hope she is well. If she is still alive, she should move to a free country.

Blame the woman. Sounds familiar for a certain culture.

She got raped? Must marry the rapist. Or let's stone her.

    "Interesting".

    **** Pakistain !

That culture over there is one backwards assed quagmire.

What are they afraid of from women? That the girls will start showing themselves and expressing a freedom they should have like everyone else.

Man, that is just crappy - time to join the modern world and get out of the stone age, you CRETINS !

    Sad stuff.

I dont know what to think about Pakistan anymore. Bottom line Pakistan failed to deal with sectarian divisions and they have now manifested themselves in very violent and dangerous ways. The endless gang violence that are affiliated with the major political parties in Pakistan is representative of the broader inability of the country's factions to reconcile. That is a combination of a failed political system which theoretically should allow those sectarian differences to manifest themselves in the form of voting blocs and the collapse of government infrastructure and services.

Things like education, health care, law and order, etc.. all should be provided by the Pakistani state. Instead you have religious groups and private organizations filling in that void and in the process injecting their own interests into everything. The Muhajirs (who control Karachi and are very powerful in Sindh) for example might be very progressive in terms of their view of Islam and the state (they are largely secular) but their insistence on pushing the interests of Urdu speakers as opposed to the Pashtuns and Sindhis meant that religious tolerance was meaningless in the face of their intolerance towards other cultural groups. (And to be fair to them, the Sindhis and Pashtuns are just as guilty in terms of mass violence in Karachi)

There is nothing inherently wrong with Pakistan. A quick trip to the old city of some major city in India with a historic Muslim population (such as New Delhi or Hyderabad) will reveal a very conservative Muslim population. Women wearing full covered burqas are common. Men in traditional Muslim garb as well. In general its a very conservative brand of Islam. Yet as a Hindu I have absolutely no worries about walking the streets or interacting with the locals. And yes you can find alcohol (although its harder to find in Muslim areas). And I can freely express being Hindu with no qualms. Because at the end of the day, those Muslims have the ability to voice their interests at the ballot box. (And they form a critical core of the ruling coalition government in India)

Bottom line if Pakistan can get a functioning democratic system and government agencies and ministries that are meritocracies, there is no reason why the country can't work. Jinnah, the founder of Pakistan, after all envisioned a liberal democratic state that protected minorities. Jinnah himself wasn't religious and did plenty of "un-islamic" things like drinking alcohol. India isn't perfect by any means (in fact it is fundamentally flawed in many different ways) but I think it gives an insight as to how conservative Islam can work in a democracy with other religions while maintaining some basic level of harmony.

I'm in Pakistan right now (Lahore), and can assure you that the majority of the population does not engage in this culture.

    And it's Pakistan, not Pakistain.

I called it on page 1.

I do think she does this to further her career, but that's still her own business rather than anyone else's.

I couldn't understand from the article if she's in hiding or she's been kidnapped or we don't know yet?

    I did find this hilarious:

Sounds like they follow all her shows, no? lol
When your clerics don't have anything worthwhile to contribute to society, this is what they degrade into. They're all essentially a bunch of gossipers. They've been following gossip from the days of the Prophet to this day. That is their nature. That is what they do. That is all they do. They are gossip experts.

There's no such thing as male Muslim garb. You mean to say Arab garb. There are hundreds of millions of Muslims who detest Arab garb.

    Overall, agree with your comments.

Nice try. Luckily, others have better reading comprehension than you do, and I don't care if you believe what you wrote.

... Was that even necessary? You're just reigniting the flame of those who are skeptics of Islam. You're doing Muslims a disservice with those kinds of responses while ignoring the main issue here.

I, personally, do not understand all the outrage that she is receiving. Yes, she knows the consequences of her actions and is foolish to be acting in this manner by putting herself in danger. Knowing the ramifications of her actions, she is acting kind of attention-w****-ish. However, these judgemental imams/mullahs need to stop being oversensitive on these societal issues and realize that people can do whatever the hell they want. It's not their job to ridicule and judge her. If God wants to punish her, let her receive her fate on the Day of Judgement, not here. Her actions should not be the focus of religious leaders' time as they have far more important things to worry about than a revealing woman.
