I think this team was a Tyson Chandler or Sam Dalembert type of center from possibly being a 50 win team last season. What was our biggest problem last season? Getting a defensive rebound to prevent 2nd chance or in many cases 3rd and 4th chance scoring opertunities for the opposing team. We could not get the tough rebound. Dalembert is a good post defender, an elites rebounder and a damn good shot blocker. Those are exactly what the team needed last season and now he is available to us.

These are all good questions, Morey & the Rockets must decide which "route" will get them to the promise land. Les likes to be competitive, signing Dalembert would probably make you better & possibly get you in the playoffs. We have to remember, this is a business. How much financially would this impact the Rockets compared to having a "tank" season? Coming off a lock out, does Les want to give Rocket fans a non-competive team? We have to remember, there are no guarrantees. Teams like Washington, Minnesota, Toronto & Sacramento have been bottom feeders for years. Just because you get one of the top draft picks, that doesn't make your team will all of a sudden battle for the Championship. Usually that player will get you up to being mediocre & you get stuck in that rut. I prefer not to tank, let's keep getting better & then maybe sign a FA or do a trade that puts you over the top. If we sign Dalembert, only do it for the right price that allows us flexibility to get better in the future.
This is taking a long time so what does that mean? No deal? Dalembert playing hard ball? A sign in trade for Dalembert? Another trade in the works?
Not to mention the fact that it gives you 2 reasonable centers in the rotation (Hill being the other). Thabeet just doesn't quite qualify for that yet. The other role that a decent center plays is being able to effectively clog the middle by disrupting drives to the basket. That also has killed the Rockets. In many instances, Yao was a bit too slow to do that effectively. So, I say, if a good deal can be worked out that preserves the teams flexibility and cap options for next off-season, do it.

Remember, Moreyh tried to essentially make the same deal (Patterson may or may not have been included) in the CP trade for Pau. The reason why is this also would bring Nene (I'd imagine the team would have had a committment of some kind from Nene before doing so) and it's worth it to trade this collection of good to very good players for Gasol and Nene. Not sure what the team would think now that Nene is no longer part of the package. You can get "cap room" but with no one to spend it on what good does it do.

Agree with the rockets desperately needing a big man to be probable 7th or 8th seed this season and lose their own first round draft pick in an insanely deep draft. Im all for it. :grin:
You know what? I would have been totally content with Dalembert and re-signing Hayes. **** you, David Stern.
Don't forget Chuck. Allegedly, the extra cap room created by the Pau trade would have opened up JUST enough cap room to sign Nene by amnestying Thabeet and without renouncing Chuck (whose $3.75M cap hold could then remain on the books until Nene was signed). Then, after signing Nene, the Rockets could exceed the salary cap to re-sign Chuck. So, to sum up, the REAL net effect of the trade would have been: Kevin Martin, Luis Scola, Goran Dragic, the NYK pick and Hasheem Thabeet (via amnesty) for Pau Gasol, Nene and Chuck Hayes (who you would have lost without this trade) Critics of the Pau trade should consider this before trashing the deal.
Lots of educated guessing going on there Bima. Nene still signed for more $$$ than the Rockets could have offered so I find him coming here as a given to be dubious at best. DD
I am pretty sure Nene would rather come here to play with Gasol and Lowry then go to the Nuggets where they have barely enough guys to put on the floor and has no chance of going anywhere any time soon (not that we do, but if that trade went down, we would be to 6 seed in the west at minimum).
PER YEAR, Nene ended up signing for only $13-14M. The Rockets could have offered that--AND a chance to contend--on a four-year deal. I'm fairly confident that Nene would have taken equal money on a per-season basis on a winner than an extra year of the same money on a rebuilding project. I had been expecting Nene to demand $15-16M per. When he finally signed, it became ever-so-clear to me how close he was to becoming a Rocket and why it took him so damn long to finally come to terms with the Nuggets. He was waiting on us to make the Pau trade. There's a small chance that I'm wrong, but I'm convinced of this.
