Morey was holding back... visibly upset about the deal falling apart. Absolute pure guess, but I got the feeling we'll be rolling with this team for awhile. Gasol was a big part of their plans.

So there will be no major or even minor trades?

"pure guess"... I just don't think Morey would have been that upset still had they felt strongly they had another great option within days, but it is a guess. After all, the Clippers trade just happened yesterday so it may be more fresh in his mind.

He needs to move forward. In the position he is, by lingering on it, he risks offending the players involved.

Stern is like a mafia godfather. He does not tolerate dissent. It's ridiculous that he has a right to silence everyone with the threat of heavy fines and basically destruction. I love that JVG stood up to him a few times, but if I was in Morey's position, I wouldn't either, at this point.

The good thing is that eventually, all dictators disappear.

I am expecting a trade for HOU. Otherwise the hoarding of G's makes no sense. We've got way too many "assets" now.

I don't think the Rockets have much choice but to roll with the team they have. The free agents still available will make us marginally better, and are not worth the cap hit.

There are no stars on the trade market, or expected to be on the market that we can make a run at.

Do you think there is any chance that Les Alexander gives in and lets Morey deal players such as Scola and Martin for assets or other young players in an attempt to improve through the lottery.

    A very reasonable guess.

The Gasol trade would have landed them a star (Pau) and a near star (Nene) and a team with cap room remaining to make moves in 2012. Absent the trade, it seems job #1 right now is not to screw up the 2012 cap room with any move except for one likely to bring in a real star.

Besides, they might as well find out what they have: what guys like Jordan Hill and Terrence Williams are made of, whether Kyle Lowry can put up near star-level performance for a full year, whether Patterson can take a step forward in his development (I think he has the potential to be a Chuck Hayes-like defender, solid fundmentals and smarts, less brute strength but better verticals).

Don't see any plausible trade that both preserve the cap space and immediately make the team better-- maybe Scola for Okafor? The Dalembert signing would work only if he'd agree to take a 1 year (or partically guaranteed 2nd year) deal.

NBA may be more balanced now than would be if Paul went to LA, but this was achieved at the cost of principle (free market) and credibility - a cost way too much in my view.

Morey does not care how players feel, they are assets. How many players on this team, were here 3 years ago.

I remember in 2005, I was so upset with Hunsicker's departure, even after we made it to the World Series that offseason I decided to self-impose a ban on giving patronage to the Astros until Drayton McLane was no longer the owner.

It invoked much more damage in me than it did in McLane to be sure--baseball used to be my favorite sport to watch, and poof, after three years I went from knowing about the top prospects in each team's farm system to not knowing about any of the prospects from our own farm system, and not even some of our players (yes I know this is not a stretch for Astros fans anymore because we are so bad).

I'm nowhere near that point with the Rockets, since the management and ownership still to me seem to be well-meaning and competent within the parameters of their framework. But the NBA as an institution has no credibility in my mind right now. I look at David Stern, and I see a behind-the-scenes draft lottery where the top 3 picks are doled out unfairly; I see a referee who is on the take accusing all his other coworkers of being influenced by the front office; and I see trades rescinded and owners and GM's made to shut up for fear of being blackballed. I don't have to be a conspiracy theorist whacko to call it like I see it.

If I feel like this is not a game, this is not a sport but rather a show put on by a bunch of executives in suits, then why on God's green earth would I continue to follow it in the vain belief that maybe one day the team I follow might have a chance to win? Actually, it doesn't matter who wins anymore. All wins are tainted by now. This isn't basketball. Basketball happens on the street, in the rec center, to a lesser extent in college before TOO much money has gotten into these players' hands. This is entertainment. Middle aged women have soap operas and Tim Tebow. Senior citizens have Fox News. Young women have Bridezilla. And I along with most other men have Sports. We don't have to follow this one if we don't want to. Especially not if we don't believe in it anymore.

Yeah I don't know the more I talk myself into this the more depressing it gets. My college team is perennially good. Wake me up when Stern decides to favor us or when he dies. It doesn't matter which.
