He doesn't necessarily have to be a dead eye shooter from downtown or anything.

    Think Andre Iguodala-lite.

Lowry was more effective than Brooks when he lacked a consistent 3 point shot.

T-Will is a good passer and as we've seen is more than capable of driving past his defender.

Those are the qualities he shares with Lowry, and I'm certain he is more than capable of being effective on the floor as long as he plays the system. If he develops a jumpshot, that just means his immaturity is the only thing holding him back.

i dont know why people say t-will learning to play within the offense and playing off the ball should keep him from getting playing time..it depends on the coach really. last year adelman started bud because bud knew the offense really well, BUT he struggled badly at times on defense and adelman lived with it because he knew the offense..i think now with mchale we have a coach who truly bases his coaching on the philosophy that defense wins championships and will be willing to let the offense take a hit if that means IMPROVING the defense... and that is where twill's biggest chance lies, bud does not have quick enough feet or the lateral movement to be a great or even good defender in this league, twill on the other hand does and he needs to show it by working his ass off and showing to coach mchale that he CAN be a defensive stopper..

Bud held opponents to a 12.7PER, his defense was pretty danged good, but people for some reason think it wasn't...

Now, that doesn't mean the job is his ,he did a pretty good job as a starter, but I think with McHale all positions should be open, there are no starters right now, whomever plays the best, starts.

im not to sure on how the stats are calculated but i watched every single game last season, i would say bud is a average defender.. he got blown by alot and those blow bys lead to not only his man scoring but it leads to assists and open shots for another player.. them missing isnt a result of buds defense being good because bud is the reason the defense broke down and allowed that open shot. its a make and miss league but his defense sometimes leads to open shots. stats do not tell the whole story...im not saying hes horrible or anything but i think right now he is as good as hes gonna get on the defensive end..

So would you call Lowry a pretty good defender? Because he gets blown by a lot too.

See I think that it is near impossible to play good D on the perimeter with the no hand check rules, while I agree with your assesment about Bud being an average defender, I don't think he is that bad.

Now the Lowry comparison was obviously meant as an extreme example, I would say Kyle may be the best defender on the team, but he is not quick enough to stay in front of real quick PGs...but he positions himself smartly to compensate, and I see that from a lot of our players.

Anyway, clearly TWill is a lot more athletic than pretty much everyone on the team, he has the skills, the talent, and seemingly the work ethic, but he has to play within the system, he is not a TMac talent - he seems to have the "I think I am better than I really am" syndrome.

Maybe he will get it this year, I certainly hope so...

i agree the rules make it virtually impossible to be a good perimiter defender.. but ive seen bud make some other mistakes also like giving the baseline and not funneling the offensive player to where your defense loads up, he seems to miss rotations sometimes too.. some of these things come with practice and some others are basketball instincts.. and i think he works really works on it but i believe he will always be the easiest target for offenses to attack

Wait a minute, when did you see him play? He played a couple of years ago for NJ Nets and shot 40%.

I'm really surprised 75% of the people around here think this lame brain is going to make a contribution this year. I hope he turns out to be great for us, but so far he looks like a major screw up.

again, you can't say this until he proves. He has the potential and natural athletic talent to be better than bud, but he isn't a better NBA player at this point. Athleticism and flashy play isn't everything. Extreme example, but stromile swift is more athletic than a big chunk of pfs, he's still not better than them.

I'm not even trying to bash twill. He's insanely athletic and has natural talent and ceiling much higher than Bud's ( obviously ).Saying he's better than someone that earned a starting spot in the NBA is going overboard. Let the dude prove it with his play. He should be getting much more time this year.

I doubt he would be on here saying he is better than a teamate, that would be pretty bad to do to a teamate.

One would hope he is more mature than that.
