Too bad for the NBA, they can't just do something "for the principle of it" when there's no CBA language to back them up. Players Union and Paul are going to have a hell of a case if they can take it to a 3rd party.
Season hasn't started but the leading candidate for Defensive Player of the Year is David Stern who has blocked every trade for Chris Paul so far.

Give it up everyone. look's like Jordan hill or Thabeet might be our starting center. Morey is running out of OPTIONS unless he's thinkin signin NENE ...since he wanted him bad at first. and Got no more options. I don't know. I've been sittin on this site everyday since that trade...ahhhhhhhhh...rockets getting boring now.
This was what New Orleans and david stern wanted to tell the rest of the NBA and its fans: <iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/H4hKh6ZQGOE" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
I think Stern is calling CP3's bluff about him not signing an extension and opting out. If he does that, and walks as threatened, he gives up $30+ million in earnings. If he stays this year, the new owner can S&T him next year.... While it sucks as a Rockets fan, I can see what Stern is doing here.... DD
You have to wonder if when it's money time Paul will tell Stern to kiss his *** and sign for less money in a major market. If Paul does that he will be my hero. A player giving a $30 million **** you to the Commish would be epic.
How long does a player have to be on a team before that team has bird rights? For instance, could CP3 sign a 1 year mid level deal then re-sign a 5 year max with the same team the following year and exceed their cap?

3 years to get full Bird Rights. He'll be better off signing the FA max without Bird rights than doing that.
