they already offered him a 5 year deal. It was just at a lower rate per year than what the Rockets could offer. the other side of the coin is if Gasol knows the Grizz will match any offer but doesn't want to be there, why would have request a team to make the offer and basically guarantee his stay in Possum Holler
Signing that offer would be resigning to the fact it's getting matched and he's staying in Memphis. I do agree that it's most likely he's using the Rockets as leverage for more money from Memphis.
I think at this point, we can only hope that Marc actually wants to leave and is willing to play a year and walk next year. If that threat is genuine, perhaps the Grizzlies decide to do a sign and trade with Rockets. This maybe why Morey has put up the threat of the offer sheet without actually committing to it (hasn't waved Thabeet). I think both the Rockets and Marc know that as soon as he signs it the Grizz will match. If he doesn't sign it, either the Grizz flinch and trade him or they flinch and up the offer. Either way, it is in his best interest to wait and not sign the offer sheet yet, even if he actually wanted to come to the Rockets.
If he wanted out he would be more vocal, and he would have signed an offer sheet. He is working us.... DD
Even if he was vocal, why would we know about it? It is possible him and his agent have been communicating with Morey through back channels to avoid colllusion. Maybe his agent wants Gasol in Houston? Maybe he is working us to get more money from Memphis? We don't know.
Anyone upset we didn't get Chris Bosh? I'm not. Marc Gasol is nothing but a $15 million a year shot blocker. And mediocre at best. He's not an efficient rebounder and not much of a scorer in the post. Let Memphis overpay him.
1. Can we make an official offer without amnestying Thabeet? 2. If we do, how long are we stuck while Memphis matches? ( 3 days?) 3. Does that throw us completely out of the Nene race?
Keep it simple. The simple answer is the most likely to be right. The Rockets are being used as leverage.
He didnt sign the offer sheet because there was no offer sheet. He has a verbal offer from Houston at max dollars, provided Memphis will let him go. Morey is not going to put an offer sheet in front of him in almost ANY scenario. If we get Gasol it will be a SnT where Memphis is a willing participant.
He has a max offer from the Rockets He has a non max offer from the Grizzlies, which is still higher than the Rockets offer in total because it is 5 years vs our 4, but it would not be bigger per year than the Rockets current offer. A max offer from the Grizzlies. 5 years, max raises, which would top the Rockets offer both in aggregate and in per year numbers. This is what he wants. This would all end if another team gave him a max offer sheet and he signed it. Wallace would match and it would be over and done. The Rockets will not present an offer sheet because it would cause them to lose Thabeet and thier amnesty option for nothing. This is basically a standoff. Here are the outcomes IMO: 1.) Heisly caves and offers him max allowed 2.) A third team offers a max offer sheet and Gasol signs and Wallace matches 3.) Gasol demands a SnT (best options for Rockets) 4.) They negotiate and a mutual agreement is come too. (5 years, per year number exceeds Rockets, but is not a max deal)
Memphis is just pulling a Morey. Letting someone else help set the price. Which is gowanns 2 B steep. Unless there's a 3rd team involved, we have no center to offer them. Kevin Martin, I could see them needing. Otherwise....
Don't see how anyone thinks this isn't just Morey trying to expedite the center saga. If Memphis passes, neat, but they will and that will get the Nene wheels rolling.
morey never gave official deal but has verbal agreement to a max deal. puts memphis in a bind. we also gave grizz option to save face by offering s&t. also we should consider varejao trade. He is like a 6'11 hayes and his win share value is pretty high. Clev doesn't need him and he can be had for youth and pick.
What they don't want Jordan Hill? Ha. $55 million over 4 years is a lot to offer a guy who averages 11 points and 7 rebounds. Memphis already has 2 max contract guys. You don't think some funny good be happening? Morey isn't stupid and you gotta know he was pissed when Pau was blocked. I think $55 million might be just above what Memphis would pay.
At some point what I like about basketball is aesthetic. If the Rockets had Martin Scola and Varejo, my head might explode
McRoberts and Rush obviously aren't going to be part of Memphis's rotation. How do they pay Gasol and get another player of Mayo's caliber?
Just read where Maurice Speights is being shopped......anyone think he could be a fallback option instead of Dalembert?
