Pursuing Marc Gasol sooner would not change Memphis' ability to match any offer. Considering M.Gasol hasn't signed anything yet, I don't see your point.
It is strange that Gasol hasn't just accepted Grizzlies offer. (Demand a trade Stevie Franchise style Marc...)
Well they would still match him or if they won't like him being unrestricted, then we trade for him and he could simply turn into a one year rental for someone like KMart. It is actually a really good ideal but the risk is passed down to us as well.
Once an offer is signed and matched he could not be traded to the team that made the offer for a period of 1 year. DD

If you strike out, you strike out, and at which point you can go back to Les and say that 4 letter word... Spoiler
Grizzlies already offered Marc Gasol a 5-year deal which is rumored to be oveq the $60mil range which is more than any other team can offer. The only cause for concern for the Grizz is that he still hasn't signed it yet. As expected, our only chance of snagging him is if he wants out of Memphis and demanded a S&T.
IMHO it would probably take something like Bud, PPat, Drajic and 2012 NY pick to get a SnT done. He certainly is NOT going to be cheap. Probably worth it though since DMo will be here next year.
