He was originally brought here because Morey thought his ability to draw fouls would be perfect next to Yao Ming who also drew a lot of fouls meaning the Rockets would constantly be in the bonus. Plus, we had Battier to help cover up his deficiencies on defense. Now that Yao and Battier are gone, this potential advantage isn't as valuable. He can try to improve his defense all he wants, but he his rail thin and never going to be a great defender. Offense will get you to the playoffs, but defense wins championships. Just ask the Suns.
If Morey worked this to steal Gay out from underneath the Griz everybody on the board would need to beg forgiveness for questioning his aptitude. Martin+ Filler for Gay would be a robbery. Before Gay got hurt last year he was a vastly improved player. Mostly in his decision-making (not a black hole player) and much much better defense than he has previously played. Most attributed this to his time on team USA. Of course this is yet ANOTHER pipe dream... but that's pretty much all we have these days.
