On another board, we were discussing discrimination in the workplace and I was mentioning that homosexuals will unfortunately experience discrimination in the job search process (as someone who writes resumes and helps people with job search for a living, I have a bit of background knowledge in this). We're in a town of about 200,000 people, so maybe this person's response was based on that, but I just had to repost it here to get an opinion of how one would even respond to this- I have my own "are you serious?" response but I'm not sure how to respond without insulting this person's intelligence. OK, here is her response: "That I never once said that the discrimination against gays didnt exist. I asked YOU as the resident expert on Resumes HOW it could take place as I have never seen one application with a question on sexual orientation. If a Manager gets a notion in his head that you MIGHT be gay and decides not to hire you because of it.. that is no different than a Goth who walks into an interview sporting all black leather, wearing chains, nose rings, etc.. and having thier interview go awry by thier appearance. Jobs are most definitely decided by your appearance, so I ask again.. explain to me please how one can walk into an interview and have thier sexual orientation decided by thier appearance..."
I'm not sure where you think she is being ignorant. As far as I can tell, her only arguments are that there is no sexual orientation question on applications and you can't tell someone is gay by talking to them about work for 10-30 minutes in a job interview unless they went out of their way to somehow highlight their sexual orientation like a Goth would be doing by wearing Goth accessories. Unless they are seeking a job from someone with prior knowledge of their orientation (but not a high enough opinion of them to overcome their anit-gay bias), it doesn't seem like it would come into play. I am quite certain that there are many people that I have met who are gay that I did not know where gay. I am equally certain that there are people who I thought were gay that were not.
There is some discrimination against every group of people but it is the exception and not the norm. Even white males can be discriminated against. I work with a very conservative group of people. Our boss was a lesbian (she got promoted) and there are two other gay in the department. It has never been an issue where I work and I am about as a conservative Christian as you will ever find.
Discrimination is based on perception. Many individuals who have been perceived as gay- whether it turned out to be the case or not- have been discriminated against in the job search process- I have numerous examples from clients I've worked with- doesn't mean there aren't exceptions, but it happens, trust me. And you can't compare it to someone who comes into an interview dressed in leather pants, etc. Oh, well- all I can say is that it happens.
Serious? White males 18-40 yrs. old are some of the MOST discriminated people out there. Affirmative action has made it that way. AA needs to be done away with. There shouldn't even be a box to check for race on someone's employment application.
No, they aren't. Extend the age range and you will see that they control almost every major corporation, government, military, etc. The white male is in charge of the society and they aren't discriminating against themselves. I don't think you understand affirmative action. It is purely voluntary unless the business has a documented history of discrimination. Yes, there are ample bonuses given to institutions that practice Affirmative Action which is why most of the ones do it. If you can find an example of an unqualified minority being given the job over a qualified white male, then please post it.
Which is funny . . . cause if they are discriminated against . .. . . it is by OLD WHITE MEN Young Men versus Old Men Rocket River
Through background checks, checking social media, googling people, you can find out a lot about a person. It is not outside the realm of possibility that someone looks at an applicants facebook profile, sees they are in a relationship with someone of the same sex, and makes an employment decision based on their sexual preference.
And that decision could be to hire them because they are gay...after all, they are single, thin and neat.
a smart job applicant or Internet user in general would keep that type of information private. By lack of common sense they shouldn't get the job. not to mention- an employer doesn't have as much free time as you might think to google out and facebook search every single name that comes across their desk. a quick google of my name would generate a ton of info about other guys who share my name, but not much about me.
