Players are as defined by their situation as their own ability. Spurs lucked out on TD, but TD also lucked out on getting drafted by the Spurs and Pops. Pops refined TD's skill, and he was smart enough to play TD at the PF spot so he wouldn't get banged by no-name bruisers night in and night out. Gasol was basically thrown out into the wild, then played in a crap system and with crap teammates.

If TD and Pau had switched places, I wonder how many rings and accolades TD will have playing with Damon stoudemire and co? In all honesty, I think his Grizzlies team would be swept by the Pau-led Spurs.

It's not just Martin & Scola walking out the door anymore, reportedly...right?

I said earlier, if we're able to keep Martin, I like this deal...assuming I know what else we are giving up.

I think you're seriously diminishing how good Tim Duncan really was. Wow.

I don't think you'll have any arguments here. KM, Pau Gasol, Nene and Lowry would be contenders, whether Nene is overpaid or not.

Put Pau on the 95 rocks and we don't even make the playoffs.

    Perfectly worded.

Max has this strange notion that this is the "end all be all" deal, when in reality it is just a talent upgrade that condenses the roster so that we can give young guys opportunities to increase their value, and then we can do it again.

Again, it is hard for me to fathom that someone can complain about the possibilities of Nene and Gasol, players that are nearly identical in age to Martin and Scola, and far more important to a championship team.

Ok..so someone tell me when we're going to have THE TEAM. We trade away all the #assets we've been acquiring for God knows how long now...to bring in Pau Gasol. But he's not the guy either? We're looking to flip him instead of building around him?

When does it stop? When do we finally build a team instead of a collection of movable parts?

Duncan is legendary, but he can't walk on water. TD forced to bang inside all season long, and facing Manu, Parker, Bowen and Gasol all alone? Even Lebron couldn't do anything against Prime Spurs, and he was even trying that time one time.

I agree with this. I'd be excited about that roster.

Pau on a crappy Memphis team made the playoffs nearly every single year. A team where Shane Battier was the next best player.

It is quite remarkable actually that Memphis was so good with Pau as the cornerstone.

It resembles Kevin Garnett in his early years in Minny before he got Sammy...

    No, I won't.

You should look at yourself, rather than asking me to do something, because I am clearly not the only one who is tired of your act in this thread.

You are generally a good poster (and therefore worth replying to, contrary to the 14-year olds who are cluttering this thread with random thoughts popping into their heads) but you shouldn't whine when someone actually calls you out when it is warranted.

Fact: We don't even know how the whole thing will shake out. Who the hell knows if the trade even happens, and if it happens, what follow-up moves the Rockets are making after that. Yet, you keep whining and complaining about Morey, then saying you think he is a good GM, then saying he will lose his job, then saying you wouldn't fire him.

I'm not a blind Morey believer, but it's a fact that you are already complaining about him when you don't even know yet what will happen.

Who the hell knows, maybe he has a follow-up move agreed to that would send Pau and something to Orlando for Dwight Howard. Maybe he doesn't even target Nene after all. We don't know.

You've just argued against signing Nene.

Lebron made it to the NBA Finals!!! Pau made it where again when he was "the man"??

holy crap...i seriously can't believe we're having this discussion. Pau is an interchangeable part to be spoken in the same sentence as Lebron, Duncan and Dirk :)

We already know what kind of team we have with the current roster.
We know we are having trouble luring a big time special talent in the trade market or through free agency.
I just hope that this deal goes through. Gasol might not be the big star that we have been looking for, but at least he changes the dynamic of the roster a little bit. Maybe with Gasol on board we can more easily do a sign and trade next year for Howard or something. Who knows?

Just change up the dynamic already. We already know what we have now is not going to get it done.

Maybe with Gasol and Nene we might be on the right track. I would much prefer Morey to try something different than to keep banging our heads into the wall with this current roster makeup.

I think that's the deal that we are all hoping for, so that is some common ground.

Seems more likely that we are going to have to asset collect for another Martin/Scola type on the wing though, unless Squid or Morris can turn into that.

And this is the problem with Morey. We never will have the team with Morey.

You guys are nuts. Answer this, was Yao the center to carry us to the championship? No. He was an all-star center that was not a first team all nba guy. The whole point of getting Pau is to replace Yao's production. I remember a thread here that was trying to compare Pau and Yao and who was the better player. Point is, Morey is trying to make a trade to replace Yao while having enough cap space to offer a large contract to another big like Nene. I think if the deal goes through, Nene will sign with us because if he weren't he would have signed with New Jersey already.
Either way, it helps us down the road with that "alpha" dog like DH in a trade.
