Is that right? Sumlin seemed to be the initial target. He's obviously waiting on TAMU. If Richt is just a rumor and he hasn't been contacted then that's definitely not a missed swing. Its a non-issue. Fedora? He wasn't a real target. Smart? Not a real target (unfortunately). I'm not sure who they're missing on? Unless the Richt rumor is true, which you obviously don't seem to think is.
That was last year, this is this year. Sorry but all things considered (school, program, location, prestige, etc) it's probably a downgrade, and Aggie fans' expectations lead to you getting fired by peoples mothers in their driveway via text message, so there's no help there either.
I think this is sort of overplayed. Of their last two coaches, one they took from Alabama (while he was doing well there), and the other was a former NFL head coach with a good track record. I don't think they are in the wildnerness stuck with only crappy coaches. They aren't in the tier with Texas, USC, Florida, Ohio State, etc, but they are in that next tier of jobs - or at least, they have been in recent history.
Don't forget: they got Franchione because Alabama had just gotten put on NCAA probation that year after the Albert Means scandal.
I think that Byrne was swinging for the fences and missed with Petersen and Richt, and it is time to complete the deal with Sumlin now. This whole thing could have been handled better just like the Sherman firing. The A&M administration definitely has some ground to make up in the PR department for themselves.
I genuinely appreciate when Byrne swing for the fences. Jeff Van Gundy? Pipedream, yeah, but thanks for trying. I'm not so sure it'll be Sumlin. He has more holes on his resume than "wins" (not literal game wins).
Best kicker, women's national title, Lechler representin' in the league, bow down sucky boys. Bow down.
Well Peterson was definitely a swing and a miss. It's more of a PR mess than A&M actually not being able to get a big hire..Big names are being thrown out there and the fan base is getting excited thinking there will be a huge spash, but really the only guarantee they have is Sumlin.
Petersen hasn't commented on the TAMU job has he? That's pretty telling (he is typically quick to dismiss rumors). And you cant fault a school for trying.
So Bullock wins the Groza award, and the big 12 names him to the 2nd team all-big 12 team ... #BitterBig12 An intersted tweet from SportsByBrooks ... "Yesterday I was told by a reliable source that rumors of A&M's interest in Richt was coming from .. wait for it .. Richt's own staff."
Good point - I had forgotten about that. I think A&M is probably in the 10-20 range of jobs. Below the top tier schools, but in the mix with other legit schools. I suspect Sumlin is still the guy - I don't see why Peterson would take A&M over UCLA, for example - but it will be interesting to learn who they went after.
Forgive me if I'm wrong, but isn't Petersen the coach who has a child with a disability? For some reason, I remember hearing that his family has grown very comfortable with the Boise St. medical staff, and that is a major contributor as to why he doesn't plan on leaving Boise anytime soon. I could be wrong though. Plus, things definitely change.
Liucci says the Aggie cardinals have chosen the new Pope of College Station. Sumlin in attendance at the UH-Big East celebration. This could be totes awk.
