I remain extremely unhappy about the trade, but will attempt to talk myself into it.....

ASSUMING no immediate follow up trade or signing:

    Morey felt that:
Lowry - Lee (Williams) - Bud (Morris) - Patterson (Morris) - Gasol
would be more balanced and competitive than
    Lowry - Martin (Lee) - Bud (Morris) - Scola (Patterson) - {Dalembert}

It does free up Patterson and Morris for development. Lee did show flashes that he could put up the occasional 20 point night (and not be the turnstile on defense that Martin was).

It was the Knicks pick, which had depreciated to a pack of gum. 2012 draft is good, but you're still staring down backups at #25. If we hit the jackpot, it'll be with our own lottery protected one....and maybe this helps us "tank" a little bit. Top 10 is stuffed with difference makers.

Essentially, you can almost look at this as Martin + depth for Gasol....and Martin is a second tier SG while Gasol is a second tier 7-footer. Rule of thumb is, never trade big for small.

We'll see what this does to the Lakers. Kobe is a ridiculous megalomaniac, so we'll see how okay he is next to a ball dominating guard (first time since the days of Nick Van Exel). Paul was far from his 21-11 playing level last year.

If Okafor left as well, I'm not scared of the New Orleans Rockets.

We've seen how well it works when no one can command a double team.

    Still.....

Martin was an OBSCENELY efficient scorer - indisputably top 5 in terms of points per shot as a 20+ ppg guy. His ability to get teams into the penalty was underappreciated.

Gasol's contract is foul. Upside is there's only two years left, and he won't be able to demand more than half of it when it expires.

If Lakers find a way to still land Howard, it's all over.

I'm hoping that we get this trade worked out. It will suck if we miss out on Nene or Marc because of this.

Well, to be fair, it IS odd that the NBA owns the Hornets. Doesn't make too much sense. If they make a huge deal like that, strengthening one of the top teams, it's as if the referee decides to just hand the ball to one team to score during the game.

NBA owns the team. League is already considered by many to be corrupt and intentionally benefiting certain teams. The Hornets are the winners of this deal, IMO, and the league is doing what is in the franchise's best interests. Of course, they should also be cutting payroll, not adding it.

Yes, I am aware of that. But I didnt expect them to come in and veto a trade that actually looks pretty good for NO.

team owned by the NBA sends their superstar to the biggest market in the NBA, seems kind of unfair, I can see how other owners would be upset
