From a basketball standpoint, we may have just made a lateral move at best. But from a cap standpoint we have just created so much flexibility that we can legitimately have a shot at DH12 and D-Will next summer.

I used shamsports's salary numbers and made some assumptions (stated at bottom of picture).

    Take a look:

I think you will agree with me that by freeing up enough space to easily sign a max player (declining team options on Thabeet, Williams, and Hill), while having a supporting cast of

    Kyle Lowry/Jonny Flynn
    Courtney Lee
    Marcus Morris/Chase Budinger/Chandler Parsons
    Pau Gasol/Patrick Patterson
    Dwight Howard/Donatas Motiejunas

will effectively offer basically the best situation possible to Dwight. This is absolutely the best team he can sign with if he moves as a free agent.

    With D-Will:

    Deron Williams/Kyle Lowry/Jonny Flynn
    Courtney Lee
    Marcus Morris/Chase Budinger
    Patrick Patterson/Chandler Parsons
    Pau Gasol/Donatas Motiejunas

My mistake -- I forgot about Jonny Flynn and I didn't know Dragic was included in the trade.

I will update the picture soon.

CP3 will sign an extension with the Lakers, and if they get Howard, he will too.

this isn't about howard (unfortunately), but it is about cap space. the rockets got outbid for chandler. they would've been outbid for marc gasol, nene, and deandre jordan. now they have the ability to land one of them.

if not, they can try to land deron williams this summer. with the knicks and their own (likely lotto) picks, they can add to a VERY young core. maybe save the cap space for 2013 and go after blake griffin.

another thing to consider is that pau can be traded at the deadline for an ending contract / young players / picks.

I was reasonably optimistic about this trade before, but if it's true, this is great. We'd probably have to dump Flynn or Williams for nothing, but if we could get D-Will or Howard........................that would be glorious.

What would be nice is if we could acquire one of them now and then have the cap space to sign the other one outright after the season.

Cap space is an excuse for every horrible trade Morey has made

Morey never does 1 deal at a time... I'll wait to see the big picture. Remember 2 years ago when we thought we gave up Landry and T-Mac for Kmart?

Regardless of what happens, this team before the trade wasn't even a playoff team. K-Mart never showed up in the 4th quarter and his defense was awful. With the new NBA rules and fouls, his little cheap flops to get to the line will no longer be effective. Scola is on the decline and his defense was also awful.

Lee + Patterson getting big time minutes will increase our defense big time and I feel like both of them will do a lot better offensively with experience and minutes. Also, we finally have a legit inside scorer with Gasol.

If that doesn't make you feel better... we have enough money to sign a big time free agent or trade for one. Gasol can also be packaged for a super star later down the road if things don't work out.

Thanks for the breakdown. After Thabeet amnesty... IF we signed a center (ie Nene) to a big money deal our roster (or under contract) would be broken down as follows:

    2 PG: Lowry / Flynn

    1 SG: Lee

    3 SF: Bud / T-Will / Morris

5 PF: Pau / Patterson / Donuts (stashed in Europe) / Parsons (assuming we sign him)

    2 C: Nene / Hill

We are left with no depth at SG, a questionable backup PG, 3 guys fighting for PT at SF, and pretty strong at the 4 and 5. With Donuts in Europe, we'd only have 11 guys suited up.

If Morey could somehow move Bud / T-Will for a serviceable backup 2 & 3 AND resign the Chuckwagon, our roster would be much more balanced.

RT @LarryCoon NO can't send out just CP3 ($16.4M) & get back Lakers Odom, Rockets Scola, Dragic & KM ($31.1M). They have to send more out.

I have a feeling the Hornets are going to send us Emeka Okafor...

Did you factor in Gasol's trade kicker?

Twill can play at the 2. Also, Parsons is a 3, not a 4.

T-Will would be our back up SG.

Thanks, I wasn't sure of his NBA position. That still leaves us with logjams at the 3 and 4. I don't see T-Will as a natural SG which is why I listed him at SF.

Hmmm, play next to Kyle Lowry and Patrick Patterson or Kobe and Chris Paul (thanks, Morey)? Yeah, how can Dwight not choose Houston...
