i think we should reflect on how different this roster looks now, especially after this deal goes through.. only 1 player from the 2009 playoff team (god bless every player on that team) is still a rocket: kyle lowry im a morey-ite through and through, and even i am surprised at how fast our roster has changed. thoughts?
I don't see how any other course was possible. The '09 playoff team was built around a core that doesn't exist anymore. Rebuilding was inevitable. The last thing you want is a GM who keeps limping along with patchwork solutions that keep the team so-so at best; look what happened to the Astros after Biggio and Bagwell retired.
there is no one to build around. why would we hold on to players that we aren't building around? until you get a 'face f the franchise' type player, then you wheel and deal. right now there isn't one bad contract on our roster. how many teams can say that? we have hit complete rebuild mode without becoming the conference doormat. les demands morey field a competitive team while rebuilding, near mission impossible, and morey has been doing it brilliantly. pau is the best player we've had since yao/tmac were healthy. we only got him because we were able to get steals on borderline allstars - martin and scola. morey didn't plan on building around them, it was asset management. you better believe acquiring gasol is the same thing. at the trade deadline offers will be pouring in for him from teams hoping to make noise in the playoffs. DM can get serious draft picks, young players, and cap space in return.
The thing is, that constant turnover does not produce cohesion - it is a self fulfilling prophecy of failure, to never know what a certain group of guys could accomplish because you are constantly turning the roster over. Whether or not it is better will only show in the results.....but so far, treading water is the norm. DD
After two years of being stuck in a limbo, it was time to make a drastic change. We as fans grew close to our players and appreciate for what they brang to the table but as a GM, Morey has to make tough choices. Anyone who thought Daryl was playing it safe can scratch that off now. I admit I was one of them that thought he was. His timing would be considered brilliant if he can somehow turn this team into playoff contention. That would mean that he provided us with two years of mediocre, yet very entertaining games instead of having to sit through the dreadful tanking process.
I'm not sure exactly morey is going. I suspect this all part of a bigger plan. Scola was at his peak value same as Martin. Why not get a legitimate All Star Big. Gasols skill set and his worth at that position are worth Scola and Martin. Then throw that with the facts that there were no plans to build around either and knowing the what was previously stated above. Means Gasol is also a much better trade piece. I think this also opens up cap space for more wheeling and dealing. You cant just stand still we were a meddling team lets see what we can do. We got pieces. Maybe we can get a an up and coming star like a Russell Westbrook, Kevin Love and picks, theres a lot of deals out there. Remember we are trying to rebuild while you know staying "competetive".
This is relevant today. We can't seem to get a spark anywhere unless we consistently have players being added and removed.
Forreal. Only 10 players remain from last year's WCF team, that's ridiculous. Joking aside, I feel like if you're not winning, you have to make changes. But once you get the ball rolling, lock it in and only make roster changes when necessary. I'm pretty sure this last offseason proved that the Rockets' front office agrees with that sentiment, so I'm perfectly fine with their approach here.
The irony is that the one year when Morey thought we were winning and stopped the massive roster turnovers, we went on to an embarrassing season. I still can't decide what lesson we should learn from this.
That Morey was right, except for the BIG FALLACY that coaching doesn't matter. Imagine if he would have hired a competent coach in the offseason. Even with a bad start because of the problems that have been mentioned, a Thibs or the like would have turned it around to probably at minimum of 5 to 10 more wins this deep into the season. COACHING MATTERS MOREY
joey dorsey would have fixed all this team's problems. decent roster but needs more von wafer. where's david anderson when you (don't) need him? luis scola has his best basketball. the defensive presence inside that this squad is lacking. bring back steve francis. bring back yao's foot. bring back the hot tub time machine. or don't, because some things change in five years, for better or worse. bowie wrote a song about it.
Raw talent doesn't equate directly to wins, coaching, cohesiveness, personalities in the locker room almost as important as TS% Spoiler Also that Ty Lawson sucks.
